As the mainte- ance needs of the Navy grew in the lbacitic Ocean in the earlg 1900s, the Naval Station become the Naval Ship- ard. During World War I, the Shipgard constructed Z5 sub-chasers, two minesweepers, two ammunition ships, six 'nes, seven ocean-going tugs and 1,700 small boats.
