Snow and rain made practice outdoors impossible, and as there was no indoor space available, the team had less than a weelc's practice betore the tirst game, while other schools had over a month in which to round into shape. A strong intield composed ot Slrrzydlewslci, Peck, Pellicore, Westerland, and Loeser backed up the pitching statt ot Wistert, Kordilc, Kunath, Slcaia, and Hirsh. Donley and Sem- row caught behind the plate. The outtield consisted ot Freisinger, Maegdlin, Lulcowslci, and Tollstam. Schurz deteated Lake View ll-7 and IO-2. Lane, last Wistert Esterly year's City Champions, proved to be a disastrous team tor Sommer Sommertield the Purple and Gold, by downing Schurz IO-2 in two games. Ag-53,3 I ,. is Ninety-two I With Bruno Schleser and Semour Goldstein as captains, the Schurz track team developed trom an average indoor team to a tirst class outdoor team. At the second week ot the semester, eighty candidates reported tor practice at the Irving Park Y. M. C. A. Meets with Senn, Lake View, Englewood, Hyde Park, Crane, and Roosevelt gave Coach George Toppings team the necessary experience tor the City Indoor Meet held at the University ot Chicago, March 25, in which the Juniors placed fifth. Keller took third in the triple loroad jump. Toomey captured tourth in the 50 yard low hurdles, and Slipiec and Hirsch tied for tourth in the pole vault. ln the Central A. A. U. meet, the senior relay-composed ot Roessler, Schleser, Thomas, and Coates-took second. Wilk captured tourth in the 60 meter dash. At the approach ot warmer weather, the outdoor team practiced at Kilbourne Park. ln dual meets, the team de- teated Roosevelt and Austin, and the Seniors lost to De Paul. Coach Topping took nine men to the Clinton, Iowa, Gate- way Classic, all ot whom won medals. The team placed fifth, and was toremost among the Chicago High Schools. ln a quadrangular meet with Lane, Senn, and Lake View, the team took eight tirsts. The outstanding pertormance ot the day was made by Appelbaum, who broadiumped 22 teet. I-Iarz, led by Cap- tains Dan Stucka and Ted Stypczynski, lost one meet out ot six, in the past semester. The seniors defeated Lane, Har- rison, Lake View, Austin, and Crane, and lost to Roosevelt. The juniors defeated Lane and I-larrison and lost to Austin, Roosevelt, and Crane. ln the State Swimming Meet, held at Oak Park I-ligh, I-larry Rieke won the IOO yard backstroke and placed Schurz titth. Rieke was sent to Philadelphia to a National lnterscholastic Meet. He was financed by business men, taculty members, and the swimming team. I-le returned a National lnter- scholastic Prep Champ in the IOO yard backstroke. Inci- dentally, Schurz tied tor fourth place in the meet. A team consisting ot Kruckstein, Stucka, Bennett, Staloovitz, I-lammer, Rieke, and Richardson paid its own way and won the St. Louis University lnterscholastic, capturing ten ot the thirteen gold medals. At the Lake Shore Athletic Club Relay Carnival, Schurz placed second in the junior six man relay, and took tourth in the senior breaststroke, senior backstrokeyand senior medley relays. In the City Swimming Meet held at Roosevelt, the seniors placed tourth. Rieke swarn the IOO yard loackstroke in l:O5.5, shattering the old record ot I:O9. Stypczynski, captain, Kojjj Jewejj placed third in the IOO yard. crawl. The junior six man relay Jacobsen Barskj captured third, and the senior medley took second. Jewell j-ja men took third in the junior tancy div: ng, and Sta bovltz placed Johnson' Manager third in the senior diving. The team lost its only matches thus tar to Lane to the tune ot 3-O and 2-I. Schurz has deteated Senn 340, Roosef velt 3-O, Lake View 3-O, and Roosevelt 3-O and Lalce View Zel in return matches. TENNIS First Row Berger Schneider Suter, Captain Millhouse Second Row Zeeh, Manager Berger, number one man on the team, has lost only one Brandt match, which was to Bunt ot Lane. Weege, Coach The team tinished in second place in the North Section, Cgioley being defeated by Lane.
