Once upon a time, there were five bright juniors at Carl Hayden High School. These bright students were chosen to do a very in- tense and special task. Four boys went to Boys State, and one girl went to Girls State. While at state these people learned all about the government and laws of the state of Arizona. They helped in making two mock states, each with its own governor, supreme court, and all levels of state government. They even participated in election on the city and county levels. A very warm welcoming speech was deliv- ered by Arizona's Secretary of State Rose Mofford. The fortieth annual session of Girls State was held on the University of Arizona campus in Tucson in June. The forty first annual ses- sion of Boys State was held on the Northern Arizona University campus in June. It was an experience, said Luke City At- torney, James Ratliff. Bruce Rechichai said, I learned that poli- tics can be the pits even on the teenage lev- el. It was the most radical time of my life, said Mark Thoroughman. It was bad, lMeaning coolll' said Cook City Mayor, Jesse James. Jenni Bradley said, Even though I lost, I had the best time of my lifef, GIRLS ' BOYS ' STA TE 1' A J Z Jesse James, Bruce Rechichai, Jenni Bradley, James Ratliff Girls'fBoys' State 17
