On September 14, 1987, a big celebration was held all over Phoenix for the Pope's visit which was part of his National Tour. I-le vis- ited St. Simon and Jude and Immaculate Heart churches. A parade was held down Central as a celebration for the Pope's com- ing. Edward Gonzalez, a junior, attended one of the masses at ASU, which lasted four hours. The Pope talked about Native Ameri- cans and child care. Gonzalez said I felt excited because I got a good feeling inside. George Armstrong, a security guard at Hay- den who attended the ASU mass said he got soul fullfillment, a renewed sense of direc- tion towards life and a spiritual awakening. I-Ie said I felt a sense of spiritual awareness and a feeling of closeness to the Supreme being IGodl. Ralph Saiz, a senior, was a security guard at the North East entrance to the ASU stadium had to control the people and give directions. I got to see the Pope, it was fun, it was a life-time chance, everything looked pretty. The Pope's visit to Phoenix was very spirit lifting. ASU stadium's tallest attraction was a 65 foot tall, cop- per trimmed steel cross designed by Maureon McGuire. Walking out of the stadium, Pious people approach to the middle of the cross. The Pope rides by in his popemobile, proudly sharing his love. As the Pope rides by waving to the people, the crowd excitedly waves back. 16 Papal Visit THE PAPAL VISIT 4 ivxoqfvr-'Qr'O'w 'ff 'ww - H, ,,, . ,, V V r .W-,,,f,,,,.y,Lz gr VVLVVV ,K J ,.
