These people have brought with them diverse concepts, ex- periences, and ideas. The students and faculty are aware ofthe fact that the individual can only profit from his acquaintances' experi- ences if there is continual expres- sion, contribution, and sharing of ideas. Day by day, the exchange of ideas goes on at Carl Hayden High, not only between the ap- pointed hours of class instruction, but in sketching a figure, acting in a play, talking with one's friends or in the mere shrugging of a shoulder. Progress could not exist without the exchange of ideas between the student and his teachers, his friends, his counsel- ors, and his principal. A backward glance at the school year will bring to mind many things: stimulating class discussions, speeches by assembly guests, semester exams, that grueling research paper, the rainy home-coming, student govern- ment elections, graduation night, and the Junior-Senior Prom. The school year of 1960 is one full of memorable events, rang- ing from the inspiring to the ridic- ulous. This volume of the Carl Hayden High School STATES- MAN is a reflection of the 'I960 school year captured through the media of pictures and words . . . HANHILA - A PLAYER OF MANY PARTS Carl Hayden High's first principal was born September 23, 1909 in Varsa, Finland. He came to the United States with his family at the age of four, in 1913. He graduated from high school in Chisholm, Minnesota as salutatorian of his class in 1927. High school was the beginning of active participation in many diverse areas including dramatics, music, intramural swimming, and gymnastics. After high school, he attended Michigan Tech where he studied engineering for two years. Once again Mr. Hanhila pursued his many interests by taking part in basketball, music, track, the all school play, and the Golden Gloves Tournament. He enrolled in Arizona State College at Flagstaff and graduated in 1932, again salutatorian. There he added journalism to his long list of activities and became Business Manager, then Editor of the ASC yearbook. Mr. Hanhila holds a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Arizona, and is presently enrolled at Arizona State University where he is working on his doctorate. Mr. Hanhila began his teaching career in the fall of 1932 at Mohave County Union High School. During the ensuing 21 years he served respec- tively as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, and Superintendent of Schools in Mohave County. In 1953 he moved to Phoenix to accept the principalship at Phoenix South Mountain High School, a position he held for four years. In 1958 Mr. Hanhila became principal of the newly constructed Carl Hayden High School. A past President of the State Coaches Association, the State Principals Association, and the State Administrators Association, and an active mem- ber ofthe Phoenix Rotary Club, Mr. Hanhila is still the man of many interests that he was in his high school and college years. Our principal's congenial smile and greeting are direct products of his personal philosophy . . . I try to find something good in every person I meet and in everything that happens to me. Anyone who is familiar with the outstanding service and achievements of our principal will nat fail to see why this second volume of the Carl Hayden Statesman is dedicated to Matt 0. Hanhila . . . A man of many interests, a player of many parts. 1 lf 7 ,ef ., ,par-1' 4' Z.. ,,d9fy .5 ' . ' YT, 1' N. y Y A, -. 'MMM Exti- gflig .. ., V, V f Inf' s x -4- , .. With every concert, program, and festival came a feeling of anticipation mingled with the excitement that comes from wanting to perform well for a large crowd. Under the guidance of Jarolde H. Harris, John Martin, and Philip Browne, all of the music organizations have presented superior programs throughout the year. The Mixed Chorus, which can be entered only by audition, sang at assemblies, gave several concerts, entered the Valley Choral Festival, and traveled to Tucson by bus to attend the Regional Music Festival. lt also presented the musical tragedy Down in the Valley, to the Carl Hayden High School student body in the spring of 1960. The Advanced Girls' Chorus has also performed a great deal this past year in concerts, assemblies, and other programs. The Statesmen is one of the most demanded music groups on campus for assemblies, concerts, and numerous dances. The Marching Band is always busy participating in activties such as Band Day at Tempe, assemblies, concerts, boosting school spirit at football and basketball games, assisting the pom pon girls and the Majorettes with their dances, marching in the annual Rodeo Parade, and playing at graduation. Upholding its high standing as one fo the finest orchestras in Phoenix high school system, the Concert Orchestra of Carl Hayden continued to perform excellently in assemblies, concerts, and assisted the Mixed Chorus in many instances during the year. Carl Hayden's five peppy Maiorettes have appeared numerous times with the band at games, in assemblies, and in the Rodeo Parade. ORCH ESTRA bus.
