We are proud to dedicate our first annual-the Statesman-to Senator Carl Hayden. Even before this territory be- came a state, he was a respected symbol for Arizona. Soon our generation shall rise to strengthen and protect the ideals ot democracy as adult American citizens. Although our tools and methods will be those of the future, Carl Hayden's distinguished career as a statesman will serve as a working model. Teaching is a full-time iob. lt goes on after the last bell rings, many times into night with grading papers, preparing lectures, giving extra help after school, reading of assignments, preparing exams, and making out report cards. A teacher is many things, instructor, psychologist, secretary, lecturer, counselor, diplomat, and traffic cop-one could go on indefinit ely. We, the students, extend a very sincere thank you to our excellent staff of teachers for their understanding, help time, and effort on our behalf. Mr. Bailey, English Department, busily gives individual instruction to a stu- dent. Mr. Loewus, English Department, grabs a quick bite while grading papers during the lunch hour. -23- Mr. Bullard of the Business Depart ment prepares work for the next day liMc1intenonce First impressions of a school come from the appearance of its buildings and grounds. Our maintenance per- sonnel are responsible for the fine job done in :keeping clean one of The most modern and best-looking cam- puses in Phoenix. Because of the efficiency of this staff, we are welcomed each morning by neat and orderly classrooms. Doing a capable and efficient job as head of the maintenance department is Mr. Eddie Poole. Cafeteria Personnel nl I 3 rf' We most appreciate our cafeteria personnel at lunch, when we can satisfy our appetites with the large variety of food prepared for us. Not only do these people supply us with good food at lunchg but they have hot choco- late and doughnuts ready on the colder mornings and a stand where we can buy afternoon snacks. In every case a student is entitled to a fair decision by the board. The board is composed of the student body presi- dent, and a boy and a girl from the three upper classes. The chairman ofthe morlng session of the board is Silvestre Herrerap Mike Tang heads the afternoon session. This group is ably sponsored by Mr. Gannon and Mr. Lang. These students have played a valuable role in the maintenance of an orderly and systematic student-body government. -25- Student Body Officers Silvestre Herrera President Mike Tang . Vice-president Eunice Connor Secretary Judy Edwards Treasurer There are several things our student body officers have in common-Among them a ready smile, a busy schedule, and a job of tremendous responsibility. Silvestre Herrera, Mike Tang, Eunice Connor, Judy Edwards naturally have specific duties to perform peculiar to their respective offices, and they have done these well.Yet the most important responsibility of an officer is rarely defined or stated in any constitution, this is leadership. Our Student government has been successful largely because of the initiative, energy, and leadershp qualities of our four student body officers. -27- X w Beverly HSHVY Rosemarie B r Treasurer e tone Secretary Mack Crawley Ernie DUVBN Vice-president Pfesldefif The first senior class proiect was the highly successful Gridiron Bounce on October 3, 1958. Following was t Senior Talent Assembly, November 17, with singers, dancers, comedians and other talented students from all the class performing. The high point of the assembly was the hilarious skit of a girl's first kiss by the emcees, Beverly Henry and Ern Duran. Carl Hayden's seniors were pleased with the invitations they received to visit various colleges and universities Senior Day. Arizona State University and the University of Arizona held their Senior Days in October. Arizona State Colle invited the seniors in February, while Phoenix College invited them in May. Also in May, Senior classes were dismissed f Ditch Day , and all enioyed a day of frolic and fun. On April 24, our Seniors were guests of the Junior class at the Junior-Senior Prom. During an Honor Assembly i May, scholarships and awards were given to happy seniors who hadworked hard to receive them. The June 4, 1959, graduation climaxed four years of high school for Hayden seniors, the first graduating class Carl Hayden's history. Elected by their homerooms, they are a representative group for their classmates. Among their many proiects this year were the preparation of Christmas baskets and 200 pounds of clothing at Thanks- giving tor needy families, sponsoring of several assemblies, sending ot delegates to Arizona conventions, and chartering of Hayden clubs. The Student Council has increased the school spirit by selling pennants and beanies. Also, the Council has sponsored several dances and lent their hand in campaigns against polio and other diseases. The work and spirit of the T958-59 session delegates of the Student Council is certainly to be commended. -118- -'lv-f ChA'lRMAN . When tryouts are announced for the team, you wish you were like the other guys who were sure they'd make it. This game in midseason showed them at their peak which was reached with practice under the skillful guidance of head coach Gail Hakes and assistant coach Vince Cisterna. The opening game was a dreary game for the Falcon fans as Washington squeaked out a 6-O win. But the never-say varsity came back to win its next two: 18-0 over Phoenix Christian and 7-0 over Brophy. South Mountain and North, both AA powers, halted the birds 27-0 and 20-13. Then came the never-to-be-forgotten game with rival Central when the Falcons brought home the glory and the troph The last two were dreary games as the varsity lost 12-O to Tempe and 21-13 to Scottsdale.
