---i— CARYATID 1980 The first volume of the Caryatid was published fifty-six years ago in 1924. The word “caryatid comes from Greece, and is an architectural term. A caryatid is a draped female figure used instead of a column as an architectural support. The tale which it is often associated with relates that caryatids represented women of Caryae who were doomed to hard labor. (Encyclopedia Bri-tannican, Vol II, p. 603, 1974) From this, it is assumed the name Caryatid was chosen for the yearbook because it represented hardworking people. Mr. Gralak—how can you get your car totally wrecked while it was sitting in your driveway (he was supposedly sleeping. Ha Ha!)? Another one of his qualities is his coaching ability. One should not be able to find much fault with it considering the great job he has done as football coach the past three years. We. the Senior class of 1980. taking into consideration your fine personality, teaching ability, and coaching ability; hereby dedicate the 1980 Caryatid to you. Mr. Richard Gralak is a unique person. He prefers to do things his way — with his own methods for teaching and coaching. Mr. Gralak's government class for seniors is an interesting example. He'll lecture on the political parlies one day, giving students plenty of notes. The next day he'll give students a quiz over something totally different. Many times during his class, he'll interrupt it just to talk about his love for cats (Everyone knows how much he likes cats). It was an eight-page tabloid size that came out eight times during the year. Nine local businesses helped finance the Nutshell, and the Progressor-Times did the typesetting free of charge. Porcelain Products donated $150 for a camera, and the staff embarked upon yet another facet of journalism. The entire project demanded more time and work but was an excellent learning experience for the students.
