The Intellectual Side of Life in Cardinal ENGLISH These pictures will give you a faint idea of what English classes in Cardinal look like. Top picture shows English I at Batavia. Middle picture is a section of English 1 at Eldon. Bottom is the combined English IV which was taught at Eldon with students from all three high schools attending. Also available is English II and m. MATHEMATICS Top picture shows a General Mathematics class in progress at Batavia. Freshmen have a choice between General Mathematics and Algebra I. The middle picture is the Geometry class at Agency which is held in the study hall. Below is one section of Algebra I taught at Eldon. Algebra H is also available for election. More on the Intellectual Side Below Is a scene In Homemaking at Batavia. Even though small, the room is adequate for present enrollment there. Middle picture shows a Typing H class at Eldon. All three schools send Seniors to Eldon for this course. Bottom picture shows Typing I class at Agency in the midst of an assignment. Three years of Homemaking and Shorthand are available in these fields. Top picture shows a senior conducting an experiment in Chemistry. This Is another combined class. Also available in science is General Science, Biology and Physics. Middle picture is United States History at Eldon. Also available is World History, American Government, Modern Problems, Sociology and Economics. Bottom picture is a Shop class in session. Three years of shop are available to students in Cardinal. The three buildings, which you see pictured in color, are the three buildings now in use in the three town attendance centers. We cannot show you the five one-room rural schools which are also in use. We cannot show you the church basement or the part-time mortuary which are used for kindergarten in Batavia and Eldon. These show only the older buildings, the oldest of which was completed in 1897 as well as the new additions at Agency and Eldon completed within the last five years. This shows you what the physical plants look like that your children are now using. On the inside front cover you see the picture of the architect's drawing showing what the plant will look like that high school students will be attending by the fall of 1960. With all of the problems which have been faced and conquered by Cardinal, this shows that it is a community which can face its problems squarely and that it is one, which, when it gets back down to earth, will realize that back- biting and petty bickering between communities gain nothing. It shows a community which, when it really starts to pull together in harness, will go places educationally. Eldon 30 Music The music program in Cardinal is still being operated as three units of participation. Mr. Ruby has charge of vocal and instrumental music at the Batavia and Agency attendance centers and Mr. McClain directs vocal and instrumental music at Eldon. Three massed band concerts were held again this year. The bands of the three areas were combined in concerts at each of the three high school buildings and presented a varied concert under direction of both Mr. McClain and Mr. Ruby. The Wapello County Band Festival was held at the Eldon High School Gymnasium this year and the Vocal Festival was held at the Agency Gymnasium-Auditorium this spring. All three attendance areas were well represented in the various contests this year and received more than their share of Superior and Excellent ratings. Under the direction of these two capable men, the music program at Cardinal shall continue to progress and improve and give the community a music department which is one of the best in Southeastern Iowa. These groups are formed to give students additional practice with their particular instrument as well as entering them in contests to have their abilities on them judged. The small groups from Cardinal fared quite well in contests this spring; gaining several superior and excellent ratings. This is the Saxophone Trio from Agency. Students are from left The Clarinet Trio is composed of these students shown from left to right Margaret Reighard, Frances Johnson, and Linda Lewis. to right: Connie Swinney, Larry Kaprich, and Susie Birchmeier. The group brought home two superiors and two excellents. The brass sextet was composed of Myrintha Parrett on trombone, Mike Hancock on baritone, Norman Morton on Bass, Paul Thomas on French horn, Marijean Smith and Mary Jo Fowler on cornet. The Eldon Dance Band Mr. McClain, who has had long years of experience with adult dance bands, started one last fall made up of students of Eldon High School. Slowly but surely throughout the year the great strides of improvement were evident in the music which they played. They played for several community functions. They furnished dinner music for the Eldon Community Stag Dinner, Eldon High School Homecoming Dance, The Polio Benefit Party, and at the Farm Bureau Dinner in Eldon. All in all the participants had a very enjoyable year providing some sweet music as well as some a little warm for the residents of the area. Directed by Mr. McClain the members are Mary Jo Fowler, Marijean Smith, and Sharon Phillips on cornet; Mary Ellen Rupe and Myrintha Parrett on trombone; Carla Zuehlke, Sharon Kay Ragen, Mertic Fiedler, and Charlene Morrison on saxophone; Vicki Campbell on drums; and Norman Morton on piano. 45 Junior Bands Below are the two junior bands. From these groups come the experienced and well prepared members of the senior bands of later years. It is here that the patience and teaching abilities of Mr. McClain and Mr. Ruby are tried to the utmost. The top picture is the Agency junior band.
