Text from Pages 1 - 246 of the 1981 volume:

bmw Throughout its twenty-five year history Cardinal Dougherty High School has undergone a series of changes both simple and complex. A colorful variety of students, faculty, and administrators has passed through its doors, leaving behind their indelible impressions. Without their efforts and inspirations, the school would not be where it is today. The class of 1981 is also just about to leave its mark on CD. Much like this school, which has had walls torn down and rooms repainted, we too have experienced a transformation in our four years of high school. We look proudly at ourselves, these people we've become and grown to be. This change and growth will continue. Nlany more graduating classes will come of age and will open up new doors to new ideas and better opportunities. The school will doubtless undergo more changes in the years to come. We are truly forever changing. Eunienis ,, ,, , WM ,, , 'f 5133 ' 55+ gr, f 2 Fa-1- ' 5 23 if fs gf, swf ln' 'V' 'Q In 1955 the Archdiocese of Philadelphia purchased part of an estate on which would be built the largest Catholic high school in the world. The land at 2nd Street near God- frey was the Fisher Estate, empty since the mansion which stood on it burned down in 1940. After L I the site was blessed by Bishop McCor- mack, construction was begun. The school that was eventually built was named for Dennis Cardinal Dougherty who headed the Archdiocese from 1918 until hisdeath in 1951. Opening in ' V September, 1956 wlth a W freshmen and sophomore student body of 2500, it awarded diplomas to its first graduating class in 1959. I Appropriately the school motto is IN THE SIGN OF THE CROSS YOLI WILL CON- QLIER, which was alsolthe motto of Dennis Cardinal Dougherty. Y It reminds us always of his great accomplishments and high ideals. , CARDINAL DOLIGHERTY HIGH SCHOOL PHILADELPHIA - PENNSYLVANIA 19316 5' C Y L, , ,,.uE,,, ii EDDIE ZS years hui. . . we can now look back and reflect on all the events that have taken place in this school community, all the games, shows, practices, publications, report cards, and graduations. This unique chance enables us to become aware of a very important fact-these happenings didn't take place only in a twenty-five-year-old building, but rather through all the people who have passed through its halls and doors. We are the ones who make each year special, as each of us becomes an individual through our various actions and experiences. There is a common bond between the class of '81 and class of '59, however, and every other one in between. The first graduates can be compared to pioneers in that they originated a variety of traditions that still exist today. We, the latest in this chain, are going out on our own, breaking new ground through opportunity, and making a claim on the future-our future.
