Along with a diligent staff, a dedicated, concerned sponsor must be found. At the beginning of this year there was no sponsor for the Editorial section of the DIAL. At this point, Mrs. Virginia Page elected to sponsor BOTH Editorial and Business departments of our yearbook. Needless to say, organizing a staff, meeting deadlines, and taking care of the financial responsibilities lAIl financial support for our DIAL must come from advertising and subscription salesl is a full time iob, and takes a lot of patience and dedication. Without the support of Mrs. Page, there might not have been a 1974 DIAL. To Mrs. Page, I and the entire DIAL staff thank you. Co-Editor Leann Johnson Oigamgaliom 'sf 1 M. Cgbfdagw During the school year 1973-74, the choral program consisted of three basic groups. These were, The Freshman Mixed Chorus, The Swing Choir and the CCHS Singers, an advanced group of vocal students. The choral program was four years old this year and many activities were added to the performance schedule. All groups performed at four CCHS Creative Arts Concerts. The Swing Choir serves the community well by providing programs for civic groups in the town. All choral groups were once again successful at the IHSA State Music Contest, with Division I ratings won by many vocal soloist and ensembles representing CCHS. ln May of l973, CCHS Music presented, for the first time in the history ofthe school, The National School Choral Award, an honor going to the outstanding participant in the choral program. They expect to spend out-of-class time practicing in one or more of the I4 different events of competition in the Illinois High School Association. They choose what they want to work in, are coached after school hours, and are scheduled for sanctioned tournaments. There's competition within the team too for the coveted spots on tournament schedules. The team travels on week-ends, overnight trips, with expenses paid by the school. Sometimes a contestant will have as many as 5 rounds of competition on a weekend. Tired, happy with a win, or disappointed with a loss, the trips are good times to remember - even the broken-record repetition of the coach to go to sleep or lights out. Fun plus learning - plus winning -- that sums up the speech team that CCHS is proud ofl In 73-74, the speech team won 4 sweepstake trophies besides the coveted traveling SIU trophy. They won the Egyptian Forensic League Finals, the SIU Little Egypt tourney, the Logan College Tournament and the IHSA District Tournament. Om, QM The Carbondale football Terriers, led by the coaching of Vern Pollock and first year coach Bob Pankey, were back with 20 veteran lettermen, and an impressive 7-4 record. But this record is very deceiving. The Terriers started out their season with such power teams as Mattoon, Cape Central, state-ranked Herrin and up-state Urbana. The Terriers 6-0 loss to Herrin was the closest game that Herrin came to losing in their undefeated season. After the first five games, the Terriers started to roll. They won six games in a row, with overpowering scores, such as the Homecoming win over West Frankfort, 34-7, Harrisburg, 50-0, and against arch-rival Murphysboro, 57-20. The Terriers had six players picked for the Southern Illinois All-Star team. Senior Steve Maurizio was picked as a line-backer on first team Defense. Seniors Claude Sehnert and Dan Morgan were picked for second team Defense. Junior Bruce Douglas was picked for second team Offense. Seniors Bill Livesay and Brian Dougherty were given Special Mention as running backs. With a champion sophomore team and returning lettermen, coach Pollock will be anxiously waiting for next season to begin. For coaches Ken Lewis and Ben Cooper the football season of 1973 was much more enjoyable. After a dismal 4-6 record last year, a new sophomore team ran up an 8- 'l record while capturing the South Seven championship with a 6-l league record. Their only loss was to the hands of Harrisburg by a tough score of T3-8. Two highlights of the season were when they beat Cape Central after losing to them as freshmen last season. Another big game was against arch-rival Murphysboro when the sophomores won, 35-6. Therefore, Coach Pollock should have something to look forward to next season since the team has won South Seven crowns two years in succession. fx, f X Coaches Lewis and Cooper give their instructions. In the six years Odum has been coaching, he has taken 21 individuals to Sectional competition. In his first year as coach, Odum took one wrestler to Sectional, the second year he took two. This year six were taken. Next year, Bob Odum hopes to take at least seven sectional qualifiers. This season the Carbondale team had six returning varsity lettermen who provide most of the team knowledge. Leading the Terriers were the two captains Curt Parrish, who finished the year with a 26-3 record, and Mark Goodman who had a 21-7 record. Other big matmen were Mark Waicukauski 15-1, Terry Covington 25-3, Doug Knewitz 12-6-1 , Eric Schmulbach 15-1 1, Bill Coracy 17-13, and Roger Lipe 7-6-1 . The Terrier grapplers took two seconds and one third in team tournaments. ln the Murdale Tourney, Carbondale lost the first place trophy to Jackson, but later on in the season beat them in dual competition 25- 23. ln the Conference Tourney, Carbondale lost the first place position to Centralia. Towards the end of the season the Terriers lost a few wrestlers due to sickness and iniuries, but by pulling a few people up from the JV and at one time even the manager, the Terriers stood victorious. ln the District Tourney, Carbondale slipped by one half point to lose second place position to Mt. Carmel. Next year the wrestling team looks very promising, losing only five seniors. This year the wrestlers proved to other teams, that they could win even though they were down with some big starters out. Terrier basketball hopes for the 1973-74 season seemed to have been very high with 9 returning varsity lettermen from a previously 5-17 record the year before. The Terriers got off to a slow start dropping their first seven games when they finally picked up their first victory in the Carbondale Holiday Tournament against Meridian 69-53. During those first seven games, the Terriers played state honorable mentioned Murphysboro twice - once during the Carbondale Holiday Tournament losing 57-61 and the second game of the season losing 61-63 by two free throws in the last seconds of the game. Discouraged from a slow start, the Terriers ended up with two seniors from the returning senior lettermen in Darrell Sanders and Jon Lam. The season showed some bright spots. For instance, the Terriers led one-time conference leader Mt. Vernon in the final quarter of one game until things came undone and finally lost 57-70. The next night the Terriers lost a two- point decision to Marion 54-56. With these two games and the early two-point loss to Murphysboro, the Terrier season could easily have been at the time 3 and 2 or possibly 4 and 1 instead of coming out of their first five games O and 5. The Terriers look to experience next year from high scorer Scott Eriksen and jumping iack Mike Lacey who came on strong the last half ofthe season. The Terriers will lose fine athletes in Jon Lam and Darrell Sanders, one of the leading rebounders and scorers for this year's team. The Terriers are ready to forget this season and are looking forward to next year. Terrier Spirit for next year is strong and you can bet they will get their revenge for ending up this season 3-20. E l 'LXR . i QVMMQMWVM William Stephen Warner was an inspiration to many, a leader, a helping hand, a listening ear, a diligent student, and a wonderful friend. He carried a strong sense of iustice and could not be swayed when he believed himself right. His death has touched the hearts of many friends along with people of varying age differences because of his youth, ambition, and love for life. But Stephen crammed many concepts, ideas, pleasures, and experiences into I7 glorious years of life that are virtually impossible for some men to do in 70 years. So actually this is not the end, but a beginning . . . for Stephen . . . and the rest of us who looked to him as an inspiration and friend, and who will make a living memorial to him through a life well spent. memes, mmm These Seniors represent the faculty's choice for the 10 Outstanding Seniors, out ofthe upper V4 ofthe Senior Class.
