MUDL3E3 KEKDRUUEBUUS To The Students: As editors of the DIAL, we are taking an opportunity to announce the 50th anniversary of the yearbook and to explain some of the problems and changes that took place this year. First of all - it's I 973 and what better time for the anniversary of Carbondale Community High School's yearbook - the Dial! Except for a one year break during the war, the DIAL has been faithfully produced for fifty years. Having been involved in the production makes us pretty impressed with that record! The '73 DIAL has a few outstanding features worth mentioning here. The cartoon drawings introducing the four class sections were choosen not only to characterize individually the classes but to recall images from days gone by. Throughout this DIAL reprint of pictures from past DIALS were used to contrast I973 with previous years. The function of a yearbook is to capture the essence ofa school year. In this DIAL we have tried to show the life of CCHS in I 973 by using glimpses of the past as a backdrop. One notable change this year, is the discontinuation of the DIAL dedication. As editors we felt that the dedication had outlived its function as an integral part of the yearbook. There are MANY faculty members who are deserving of recognition for their outstanding achievements in and out of the classroom. The DIAL has recognized only one teacher a year, the teacher being chosen only by a maiority vote of the DIAL editorial and business staffs. For these reasons, we choose to discard the traditional dedication and to simply commend all past and present faculty mem- bers of CCHS. Many factors contributed to the tardiness of the i973 DIAL. It must be pointed out that the advisorship of the DIAL changed hands and the decision of who was to be the advisor was made late in the fall, when the yearbook should have been well underway. Another problem arose with the professional photographer. It is essential that a yearbook receive its photographs on time in order to meet company deadlines. It will suffice to say this did not take place. Very little co-operation and help was given to the editors by the members of the DIAL editorial staff. The staff was unusually small, ineffective, and apathetic, leaving the maiority of the book to be constructed by the editors. However, our thanks and appreciation to the few staff members who did their share and are recognized in the staff listing on the DIAL page in the Organization section of the book! We hope the student body can enioy the I 973 DIAL and perhaps actively support and appreciate the effort put into the DIAL in future years. Sponsor. x 'Ln-vulv.,2 To The Students: The Organization section of this yearbook has a different look this year. A quick glance will tell you that something is missing. A second, more scrutinizing look will tell you that not only the information about the clubs is gone, but the names of the members of all but the tiniest clubs have also vanished! A few words of explanation are necessary. First of all the DIAL gives a sheet requesting specific information llike the name, for instancel about the club to all spon- sors of clubs, to use for the yearbook. This year the response was at an all time low and the question that came to mind was: Is it the DIAL editors' iob to go to each individual club and gather facts and interesting information about the club's activities? We thought not. The lack of names is regretful and resulted from mix-ups and hassles on the days on which group pictures were being taken. We hope you will take an opportunity to collect the specific names you wish to remember and also will make an effort to cooperate more fully on days when group pictures are taken in the future. As the gridiron season rolled around, the young, inexperienced Terriers were hard at work. Likewise, was Coach Pollock and his new coaching staff which included Coach Schoch and Coach Lee. As September I5 finally came, the optimistic pups traveled to Cape Girardeau to be put down 47-zip by the second rated team in the state of Missouri. The next week the Terriers got into the winning track with a 7-0 win over Centralia. Next came two very close losses, one against Herrin and the other against Urbana. Then a 6-zip homecoming win over Marion initiated a four game winning streak over West Frankfort, Harrisburg, and Benton. Carbondale closed out the season with two disappointing losses. The first one was to an excellent, veteran Murphysboro club, and the final was to the Mt. Vernon Rams on the astro-turf at McAndrew Stadium. The young Terriers were on the inexperienced side on offense as quarterback Lance Laybourn had only two seniors, Dave Woolard and captain Keith Reissaus. The first half of the season the offense was punchless as they scored only 27 points. Finally things started to roll as the offense combined for a total of 97 points the second half of the season. Veteran, Livewire, Billy Livesay had a very hard time getting a foothold in the turf in the '72 season as the Terrier gridders played seven of their games in the rain or on a muddy field. On the other side of the line, the defense was as strong as the offense was weak. The defense held a nine to ten senior stand throughout most of the season. They had the experience, but once again they lacked in size. Aside from the Cape Central stomp the Terrier D held opponents to 89 points, in a total of nine games. Although the 5-5 season wasn't very promising the future season will prove to be a very interesting one as the '73 pups will return and have the experience and numbers needed to compete in South Seven competition. They have already been predicted among the top ranks of the South. As stated before by Terrier coaches, We'll be back next year. SECOND ROW: Coach Ben Cooper, Mark Goodman, Steve Knewitz, Doug Knewitz, Tom Lipe, Jim Miranti, Dan Morgan, Mark Wai- cukauski, Coach Robert Odum. As the 1972 school year opened, Coach Bob Odum was having serious doubts about the up and coming wrestling sea- son. The previous year had been an excellent one but this year only promised two returnees. Curt Parrish and Steve Knew- itz, both captains for the 72-73 season, would have to carry the standard of experience. The year progressed and the practices grew harder. Coach Odum was really driving his inexperienced team, for the first meet was not far away. He soon realized that he would have to enter the season with only three seniors, but iniuries soon eliminated two thirds of the four year wrestlers. Doug Frost broke an ankle putting him on the disabled list and Russ Rags- dale received a severe thumb injury adding him also to the wounded warrior rolls. Much to the surprise of Carbondale wrestling fans, the Terriers improved vastly, compiling a deceiving 7 and lO dual meet record against more experienced teams in the South. The Terriers lost by 3 points to Jackson, Missouri, a team who finished fourth in the Missouri State Meet. In tournament action, the wrestling Terriers were their most brilliant. Carbondale finished third in the Murdale Tourney capturing a first, three seconds, and a third by Charlie Bursey, Terry Covington, Curt Parrish, Steve Knewitz, and Darryl Ritter respectively. The Terriers had improved by District time placing second as a team. First place victories went to Terry Covington, Curt Parrish, Charlie Bursey and Steve Knewitz. Among other individual winnings was Doug Knewitz claiming a second and Darryl Ritter with a third place. Next year's prospects appear outstanding. Coach Odum will lose only one starter in the person of Steve Knewitz, How- ever, Steve's position will be readily filled and the Terriers should go on to capture the South Seven title, a new addition to Southern Illinois wrestling. With a returning cast of eight juniors, the Terriers could have an unprecedented undefeated season. On the hardcourt, the basketball Terriers experienced a rough 5 and 17 season. Burdened by lack of size and experi- ence, the hardworking Terriers proved to be very surprising at times. After the first game iilt by a state rated Quincy team, Dave Lee's crew found it difficult to get started. Following the Quincy bout they took on Murphy, Herrin and Mt. Vernon which combined for a very tough opening. Then came a very disappointing loss to the Marion Wildcats, as the Terriers lost 59 to 61 in the final seconds. The Carbondale Holiday Tourney brought a large and talented field of basketball talent to the SIU Arena. On a first game bout, the Terriers were unfortunate to draw Collinsville, the eventual tourney champs. Another disappointing loss arrived for the Terriers as they were downed 55-62 in a consolation game with Marion. After experiencing an abundant amount of turnovers in the early season going, Coach Lee changed his tactics to a more controlled, slow-down type of offense. This offense surprised an overconfident Benton ball club which was defeated in a 39-43 upset. Two games later the Terriers defeated DuQuoin 55-45. The Terriers had trouble finding another win until six games later, when they beat Harrisburg 67-60. The following game they downed Centralia 60-58. Three more games went by without production of a win until they tackled Harrisburg in a final, regular season win, 75-66. The Herrin Tigers defeated the Terriers in a first round regional game 68-56. One of the most remembered basketball games in Terrier history came about mid-season in a conference game at Mt. Vernon. The Terriers employed their slow down, control type offense. Carbondale had control of the ball the entire first and third quarters. Scoring was done in both the second and fourth quarters. The Terriers suffered a 15-14 loss on that outing. But credit must certainly be given to a team which held the basketball for such long periods as they did. In this type of game, one has to think of the self control mentally as well as physically, in addition to competing with outside pressures brought about by the crowd and the opposing team. Seniors Carl Favreau and Keith Reissaus led the Terriers in practically every statistical column. Carl led in shooting per- centages as Keith barely clipped him in total points, 1284-2711. Carl also led in assists and recoveries with 51 and 29 respectively and Keith in rebounds with 132. The 1973-74 Terriers will return without a doubt, but may be among the missing without Favreau, Reissaus and Jim Jenkins to help them out. 59 I973 VARSITY BASKETBALL WE THEY OUINCY 44 MURPHYSBORO 57 I-IERRIN 58 MT. Coach Kay Strack immediately took advantage of this sponsorship of girls' sports. Since that time CCHS has successfully developed girls' teams in the volleyball, basketball, softball and track and field competitive areas. Enough credit can never be given to Miss Strock for her attention and dedication given to girls' athletics. With the assist- ance of Mr. Reid Martin, the administration and her student teachers, schedules were planned, tryouts were held, teams chosen and long hard practice sessions began. Miss Strack began researching the do's and don'ts of competitive sports. Much was to be learned in the areas of coaching and rules and regulations, as well as the training and conditioning of the girls. On the whole the first year for girls' competitive athletics at CCHS was a tremendous success. Hats off to Miss Strock and all the hardworking dedicated girls who made the girls' athletic program what it was! The bonfire, an old, lost tradition, was once again revived and was enioyed by many as they sang and danced around the fire. The theme of the dance was The Kingdom of Atlantis and King Neptune presided over the occasion at CCHS East. A radi- ant and bubbling Nancy Lipe was crowned queen of the Homecoming dance. The homecoming football game was played against the Marion Wildcats and the Terriers proved to be too tough for them. Another exciting event of the homecoming weekend was the parade which was held after school on Friday. A mixed display of beautiful queen candidates, laughable clowns, and tipsy floats made the parade quite a show. The break was met with both delight and dismay by the couples attending the Prom for the decision was unpublicized prior to the announcement at Coronation. ln spite of the differences or because of them, the couples who attended Prom '73 displayed, in general, glowing faces and bright personalities. Any senior ranking scholastically in the upper one fourth of his graduating class is eligible for this honor. However as well as the scholastic achievement, the faculty is also asked to consider the character, leadership, and service of the students during their four years of attendance at CCHS. It is the combination of these traits and still others which narrows a fairly large field of seniors to the ten most outstanding. What is so outstanding about an Outstanding Senior? When the last bell rings, signifying the end of the school day, there are many students who for some reason or another do not end so abruptly their working day. For it is after school hours where the student participates in the many faceted extra curricular activities available at CCHS. For someone has to play in the band, march in parades, run student council meetings, practice for the big game, put together the yearbook, sing in the musical, read for the speech team and keep all the other activities and organizations on the go. Combine this leadership and service over a period of four years in high school, along with the maintainment of a high grade average, and a well rounded character, and you have an Outstanding Senior. It isn't always so easy not to go home at three-thirty p.m. when that last bell rings, but dedication is what makes the Outstanding Senior so outstanding. For this reason, the DIAL congratulates and commends the Ten Outstanding Seniors of the class of 1973. sb'-Q-...
