Mr. Stangle points to his infamous FINK OF THE YEAR diploma. An instructor must be dedicated to the student and to fair teaching. He must be able to make the confused ,,,,f understood. People who have the ca- pability to instruct and encourage the student are rare. In the classroom, Mr. Stangle re- veals this ability as an instructor, proving to be of great value to his students. He is able to explain until the questioning follow and the con- fused understand. Outside the classroom, he is always an optimistic, sincere person, whose unlimited enthusiasm makes him one of the most respected members of the faculty, by students and faculty alike. Always willing to spend his time in support of athletics and the extra cur- ricular aspects of schooling, he has served as a class sponsor, an an- - nouncer at ball games, a coach, and a friend. This DEDICATION is but a small acknowledgement of his endless services to the staff and our school, his warm personality, his cheery smile, and his friendly greeting. To you, Mr. Stangle, we dedicate the Dial of 1972. Mr. Srangle in class. The spirit generated by these five friends was led by our own Mr. Stangle I eff! ff , 1 , , 7 5 ' 5 LW. iiijif Sal LQ L! FOCUS ON RADIO Q Presentation of the WCHS News and Daily Bulletin was the responsibility of Mrs. Boyle's radio students. The practi- cal experience of writing, editing, and announcing these programs brought to these students an acute awareness of the demands of radio communication. Speech students, headed by Mrs. Boyle, competed in a long season which included thirteen invitational tourna- ments, which began in October and ended in March. These tournament experiences helped the students to perfect their work in preparation for the District ISHA competition. Nine students competed in eleven events. Areas of competi- tion were extemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking, poetry reading, prose reading, duet reading, original oratory, after-dinner speaking, oratorical declamation, humorous in- terpretation, dramatic interpretation, radio speaking, an humorous monologue. From District competition, five students progressed to the Sectionals. To top the successful season, four CCHS students qualified for State competition, in which two of the four placed, earning an excellent achievement for the team. Paul Matthews, a junior, competed in extemporaneous speaking, Pat Nguyen, a senior, participated in oratorical declamationg Max Norman, a junior, placed fifth in State in poetry reading, and Shawn Colvin, a sophomore, placed fourth in State in prose reading The tremendous success of this year's team reflects its possibilities for next year, as it is composed predominately of sophomores and juniors. EJ K X f Q D .,,.. qs Q A - ' I, fb 12493 4,0 Brian Aaron, after being sidelined for a con- cussion, came back to be acclaimed as the best offensive end in the South. WXIZQHVFO 'Terriersi became a dreaded word to Southern Illinois football teams during the 197 season as Coach Vern Pollock and his pups physically wore down most of their op nents for a 7-3 record. Of the three losses, two came from big state powers, Cape Ce tral of Missouri and Urbana of Central Illinois. The third came from West Frankforti a heartbreaking game in which the Redbirds recovered a loose ball during the final se onds and ran it in for a touchdown, clinching the game and nullifing C,dale's chanc for a sole South Seven Championship. However, Carbondale came back to win the fin three conference games, tying for the Crown with W. Frankfort and Herrin. Although known for their defense, C'dale's offense was at times dynamic. Quarte back Scott Ottesen led the Terriers, who featured an excellent running attack with pow erful jon Landt and johnie Williams. The third running back was elusive Billy Livesa , a sophomore star. All-Area End Brian Aaron also generated much of the attack. Th Terrier defense, considered best in the South, held their conference foes to an avera of 6.5 points a game. On the line All-Area Tackle Al Scronce often penetrated the o fense to sack the ball carrier for a loss of yardage. Another All-Area star, Darryl Tiptof was probably the best defensive end in the history of C.C.H.S. Other defensive stan' outs include Cliff Weldon - linebacker, Willie james - lineman,,and All-Area Guap joe Buser. DeWayne Kelly, Carbondale's fifth All-Area star, intercepted many pass playing as free safety. Carbondale's defensive achievements were verified by their shutting out Harrisburg 41-0, and the always tough Centralia 21-O. But the highlight of the season came in beat ing their undefeated rival Murphysboro 14-O, for the eighth straight time. C,dale': tough defense held the usually explosive Red Devil offense to a total of minus 14 yard rushing. The Terriers ended their schedule in good fashion by shutting out the pre-seasoi pick for the Crown, Mt. Vernon 40-O. This concluded a fine season for Carbondalt considered by many as the No.,1 team in Southern Illinois. I Gary Vogel and Scott Ottesen make a group effort in bringing down the oppo- nents. The grapplers, coached by Bob Odum and assistant coach Ben Cooper, posted a 13-3 dual record while winning two tournaments and taking second in another. The excellent season was anticipated with nine varsity starters returning from last year. Leading Carbondale during the season was Terry O7Boyle who went into the sectional tournament, undefeated but finished with a 31-2 dual record. Behind him was Phil Goodman who boasted a 28-4 record. Phil was the only Southern Illinois wrestler to make it to the state finals, only to lose to the state champion. john Muhich was another outstanding wrestler with a 27-4-1 record. Wrestling at 105 lbs., Richard Neal also helped the Terriers with a 24-3-1 personal record. Other outstanding wrestlers included Dave Freitag, 10-6-1, Curt Parrish, 16-9, Richard Hudson, 17-8-1, Al Scronce, 13-10, and Cliff Weldon, 13-11. The highlights of the season included winning the Mascoutah Tourna- ment, the Murdale Tournament, and placing second in the District Tourna- ment. At Mascoutah, Cldale had three first places from Muhich, Goodman, and O'Boyle, and two second places from Neal and Hudson. In C'dale's own Murdale Tournament, the Terriers took first place out of nine teams. First place victories came from Neal, Freitag, and O,Boyle, while the second place finishes included Muhich, Goodman, Weldon, Hudson, and Scronce. In the Granite City Tournament Cldale placed sixth out of sixteen teams. In the District the Terriers took second place. Muhich, Goodman, O,Boyle, Hudson, and Neal qualified for the Sectional. At the Sectional, Neal and O'Boyle placed third and Muhich fourth. Phil Goodman went on to state. Other highlights of the year included beating undefeated jackson of Mis- souri and Mascoutah. S UZ' rf, mm g The month of December was long awaited by Carbondale fans, for along with the winter came Terrier basketball. Not since 1967 when C'dale took second place in the State basketball championship have the hopes and anticipation of a State return been so high. But to many, the 1972 season was a disappointment. The Terriers concluded the season with a 16-10 record and tied for third place in the South Seven. Although three starters returned, Coach Dave Lee had to fill the shoes of the teamls most valuable players, Mike Waller and Tony Campbell. 6'3 defensive star Brian Aaron filled Waller's spot while the guard position interchanged between players from game to game. During the season Pat Monroe, Keith Reissaus, Charles Laster, Carl Favreau, and sophomore Ray Clayton all started at one point or other. The other three positions were occupied by vet- erans Dewayne Kelley, Willie Broadnax, and Charles Hughlett. In his third year in starting Varsity ball, DeWayne Kelley 'quarterbacked' the team from his guard position. The 5'1O 100 per-cent hustler was considered by Coach Lee as one of the best guards in the state for playing his type of ball. Next to Aaron at the other forward sport was 6'4 jumping jack Wil- lie Broadnax who came on strong in his second year of organized ball. Illustrious 6'7 Charles Hughlett, half brother of Broadnax, played at center for the Pups. In his fourth year of Varsi- ry ball, Hughlett proved his All-state potential. He not only dominated the boardsg he fin- ished as the No. 2 scorer in the South Seven. The Terriers took a 4-2 record into their own Holiday Tournament. Rated seventh, C'dale had the tough job of defending its title. C'dale first defeated Carmi 56-50 before meeting Ef- fingham. The Terriers upset the Hearts 77-62, during which Hughlett set a tourney record with the best field goal precentage. In the semi-finals C'dale defeated Chicago St. Patricks to advance to the championship game against the state champion, Thornridge. The Terriers were beaten badly 85-47, but the consolation of knowing that the Falcons were considered the best prep basketball team in Illinois history made C'dale fans realize Number two wasn't so bad. Coach Barry and Mgr. Felix Clemmer lead DeWayne Kelley off the floor following a head injury during the C'dalc Holiday Tournament. l Hayden bounces the ball off the backboard for two points. The Terriers high point of the season followed the Holi- day Tournament when they defeated Centralia, once-beaten DuQuoin, and W. Frankfort. But the Salem Tournament brought the Terriers' spirit down. The highly criticized tour- ney left C'dale with an 11-5 record. The Terriers then went on to win only five of the remaining nine games to finish the regular season with a 16-9 record. In the Regional, in which ffor the first time in historyj Illinois used the Class AA two- tourney method, Cldale was paired up against Mlboro. For the first time in ten years C'dale lost to the Red Devils in basket- ball, thus ending the season on a bad note. i Although the Terriers were disappointed in not being the ,scourge of the South', the Pups did finish with a fine 16-10 record. The unpredictable Terriers did have surges during the season, defeating Mt. Vernon twice, both DuQuoin and W. Frankfort, and taking second in the Holiday Tournament. The fact that in six of their ten losses C'dale outscored their opponents from the floor, points out -that Carbondale could have had a better record. Despite the loss of Hughlett, Broad- nax, Aaron, Kelly, and reserves Charles Laster and jeff Hay- den, Coach Lee will have Reissaus, Favreau, Woolard, and jenkins returning along with a talented ,I.V. team. 66 'av' --sf F' Q f ',o ,ofa so' Hughlett goes up for a dunk! The highlights of the season were rnany. C'dale tied with Benton for the South Seven Championship, with Randy Tay- lor tying for second place honors and Bill Meade tying for the fifth place notch. The Terriers went on to win the Dis- trict, but lost the Sectionals. Perhaps the main highlight of the year was setting a school record of 144 against Murphys- boro at Midland Hills. Pat Monroe and Randy Raylor each had sensational scores of 34, while Bill Meade and Bill Berst scored 38's. Special thanks goes to Coach Tarr in his final year as coach. Carbondale's power at bat was led by Walt Norman, whose batting ave. was .417. Other hit- ting threats included Mike Waller, Greg Konishi, Scott Schwartz, and Corky Coracy. Behind the pitching of jerry Henry and Willie Suggs, C'dale went on to win the dis- trict and come within two games of the state tournament. C'dale's Varsity thinclads took first place at the Benton Relays and at the Tri-County meet while the JV squad won the Sophomore Benton Relays and the Sophomore Pinckneyville Meet. The Terriers were led by Kenny Scott, who not only set a school record in the 440 yd. dash, but also tied the Southern Illinois record with a fantastic time of 49.7 seconds, qualifying him for the State tournament. Scott also led the South in the hundred yard dash with a time of 10.1. Tony Campbell set a school record in the low hurdles in 22.7 seconds, qualifying for State. Other broken 'school records include: David Stotlar, heaving the shot put 52.6 feet, Chris Thomas vaulting 12'6 over the pole, and Brad Lubke in the two mile with a time of 1O:23.6. The Mile Relay team consisting of Kenny Scott, Tony Campbell, Mark Gibbs, and Lee Sanders, also set a school record in 3:26.8, qualifying for state. CCHS for the first year in history, has added swimming as a sport, Being the only high school swim team in Southern Illinois, the Ter- riers could compete only in the Illinois District Meet, which composed of mostly experienced Central Illinois schools. However, Carbondale surprised the field, as Coach Bill Livingood and crew took fifth place out of thirteen teams. Mark Lauchner won the 200 freestyle in 51.5 and the 400 freestyle in 3:57.48. The latter qualifies him as a prep All-American. jim Isbell took second place in the 100 breast-stroke in 1:05.8 to qualify for state. Cidale also took third place in the Medley relay Qconsisting of Walter Bottje, jim Isbell, Mark Lauchner, and Harry Edelmanj Other medal winners included Brad Goss, taking third in the 100 butterfly, Bottje, fourth in the 100 backstrokeg and Harry Edelman, sixth in the 100 but- terfly. At State, Lauchner scored twelve points for CCHS, finishing sixth and tenth in the 200 and 400 freestyle. Lauchner was the only freshman to make the Illinois State High School Swimming Meet finals. With the use of the YMCA pool for home meets and the hope of other local schools picking up the sport, Terrier swimming has a bright future in becoming a popular sport. 1972 was a good start.
