Coach Vern Pollock endured his first losing season due to the unbelievable amount of injuries which, after a slow start, sidelined nine starters. With an 0-4 record, the Pups went on to Win three of the last four games, including a last minute loss in the final game to South Seven Champions, Mt. Vernon. The improvement was verified by the sea- son's total score as the Terriers were outscored the first half of the season 53-116, but turned around and outscored their opponents the second half of the season 118-82. The Terrier football season was highlighted with an upset victory over rival Murphysboro. The Terriers went into the locker room at half, 15-12, and went on to win 45-15. With many starters returning, Carbondale can expect a fine season next year. Coach Pollock confers with quarterback Scott Ottesen. fi as -,. v 53 1970 ccHs Fogfban Recon' ' . All five starters re- turned to meet a new coach, Dave Lee. Coach Lee led the l971 Terriers to state recognition and championships in two tournaments, the Carbondale Holiday Tournament and the Carbondale's defense played a large role in winning, pre- venting their opponents from scoring in the eighties and only twice in the seventies. Rated sixth in their own tournament, C'dale played the role of the underdog through most of the tournament. In their first game against Belleville East, Charles Hughlett made a turn-around jump shot with three seconds left to tie the game up. In overtime the Terriers proved to be too much for the Lancers and won 49-45. The Terriers second game was against undefeated Carmi. C'dale upset the Bulldogs 81-69 to enter the semi-finals against Peoria Manual. C'dale was behind during most of the Peoria game until Waller scored six straight points for a lead that never relinquished. The final score was Carbondale 61, Peoria 56. The Terriers advanced to the finals against Mounds Merid- ian who had previously defeated the state's number one rated team, Thornridge. Outstanding defense was played by both teams as Carbondale came from behind 42-40 to defeat the Bobcats, 50-47. Hughlett and Waller were named to the Holiday Tourna- ment Team.
