Basketball . . . The best of the fight This years edition of the Terriers gave Carbondale one of its most successful seaf sons since the 193869 team. The Terriers compiled a 207 record, a vast improve' ment over past records. Led by Dick Howe and Ken lvlartin. the Terriers opened the season with three decisive victories. In the game with Murphysboro the Terriers set a new ref cord for the must points scored on their home floor, and Dick Howe set a new in' dividual record with 36 points. We lost the next game to a very fine Pinckneyville five. Next, the Terriers entered the XVest Frankfort holiday tourney and finished third. After a brief rest, they opened play in a very tough Centralia holiday tournaf ment. The Terriers took the first game against Salem but then lost a heartbreak er to Litchfield. Returning to conference play, we barely squeezed by the Afj Wild' cats by coming from behind in the last few minutes of the game. The next three games were all victories for the lV1cBridemen as they ran past a stalling U. High, a highly Gordon Cozadd Ken Martin James Peterson Charles Halterman is the staying, And the best of all ranked XVest Frankfort team and the fine Chester team. only to lose to the State Tourney favorites. the Pinckneyville Panthers. The Terriers came back the next game to defeat the Murphysboro Red Devils easily and to win the following game against Trico. Next, the Terriers suffered a defeat from Sparta for the fifth time in three years, but came back with decisive wins against DuQuoin, Herrin. and Johnston City, and in the following game beat Sparta for the first time in three years. Playing in their first overtime game of the season, the Terriers lost to a very fine East St. Louis team. The team closed the season with victories over the Chester Yellowjackets and Fairfield. In the Regionf al tournament the Terriers defeated Uni' versity School, only to lose to the Marion XVildcats. The season closed with the awarding of letters at a special assembly of the student body, and the annual banquet. Dick Howe was chosen by his teamates as captain. Dick I'-lowe Bill McBride.
