Our Two sTeIIar performers, LuTz and Cox, were unable To dress buf were missed very IiTTie, as The reserves were clicking perfecfly. The Allenmen led I7-6 aT The half and wenT on To score sixfeen more poinTs during The sec- ond period. TERRIERS LOSE TO PINCKNEYVILLE 43-4I Traveling info The neighboring confer- ence To meeT a foe previously defeafed on our own floor, The Terriers seemed doomed from The firsT quarTer because of very poor offense and defense work. The whole Team was badly off form and LuTz gafhered mosT of The poinTs for The locals. CARBONDALE 3I, MURPHY 9 Playing This game aT Murphy, The Ter- riers seemed To find very liTTle compefifion from our TradiTionaI rivals. Many fouls were called and half of Murphy's poinTs were of The easier variefy. LuTz confrib- uTed nine poinTs while Gill ToTaIed eleven Tallies. Carbondale srill leads The confer- ence, wiTh Herrin running second. CARBONDALE TDEFEATS HERRIN 36-3I Amid fisT fighTs and argumenfs, Carbon- dale won anoTher conference vicTory. The game was a very close one and when The Trouble sTarTed, The players and rooTers on boTh Teams were ready To TighT. LuTz and Cox sTarred offensively, while Gill, Eliis, and Crawshaw performed brillianfly on de- Tense. GOLCONDA 2I, C. C. H. S. 42 The-small Town Team, wiTh a wonderful record of sevenfeen sTraighT wins and no losses in The currenT season were only build- ing up To a IeT-down when They venfured To play The Terrible Terriers. Carbondale doubled The score aT 42-2I, wiTh LuTz and Cox sTarring in The offensive side. Gol- conda complefely losT hope when They firsf saw The fasf break of The Terriers and They were never able To geT on Their feeT. WEST FRANKFORT FALLS, 36-30 Our boys played anoTher close game wifhouf The aid of Susie Ellis. The Ter- riers could noT geT in sfride, buf Timely bas- keTs by Gill, Crawshaw, LuTz, and Cox kepf The home-Town lads in The running and They finally spurTed info The lead To win by six poinTs. Cox was The offensive sTar, wiTh LuTz and Crawshaw playing briIIianT defen- sive games. . CARBONDALE DEFEATS JOHNSTON CITY 32-3I The second game wiTh JohnsTon Cify proved To be one of The Terriers' hardesf games of The season. The name of DuTch LuTz rose To fame during Those four Tire- some periods. Besides being a demon on defense, he gafhered Twenfy-one poinTs on The offensive side. Lacking The ball han- dling abilify of Ellis, The Terriers nearly losT a conference game. C. C. H. S. BEATS ANNA 40-38 STiII weakened by The loss of Susie Ellis, our squad barely eked ouT a 40-38 vic- Tory over Anna-Jonesboro. LuTz bore The burden of The offensive work in The firsT half, buf cooled off considerably in The final periods. Anna's eIongaTed cenfer was high poinT man wiTh sixfeen poinTs. CARBONDALE WHIPS RED DEVILS 39-I6 Playing Murphysboro again, This Time on The home courf, and aided by The reinsTaTe- menf of Ellis, sTar cenTer, The Carbondale boys had liTTle Trouble in defeaTing The Red Birds. The Terriers made baskefs aT ran- dom and held The counTy-seaT quinTeT on defense. LuTz and Cox were high scorers for Carbondale. This game gave Carbon- dale The conference championship for This season. HARRISBURG FALLS, 23-I 8 Harrisburg nearly obfained CarbondaIe's scalp in The IasT conference game. LuTz, Gill, Ellis, and Crawshaw played fine de- fensive games. Crawshaw was held score- less for The firsT and only Time in The I937-38 season. Track is more or less an individual sporT. buT There are pos- sibiliTies Tor Team work and school spiriT in a Track meeT. The relay races oTTer oppor- TuniTies Tor Team work and no one can re- Train Trom cheering a runner To greaTer eT- TorTs in a race oT individuals. No sporT oT- Ters more opporTuniTy Tor exercise ouT in The sunshine and Tresh air. No sporT oTTers more opporTuniTy Tor individual beTTermenT and conquesT oT selT. The boys oT our school have realized These Things and have Taken advanTages oT The TaciliTies oTTered Tor Track in The pasT: we know ThaT The boys will make good This spring. Coaches Allen and Bridges have scheduled some dual meeTs as well as some relay meeTs. lT is hoped ThaT our boys will improve The records oT pasT Track Teams and conTinue The successes oT The TooTball and baskeTball Teams. We should be able To make some oT The schools To The easT oT us believe ThaT we have a Track squad. VVe should have several To qualiTy Tor The STaTe Track lvleeT in Champaign. There is hope Tor The largesT squad in The hisTory oT The school. Are we Taking The advanTages oT- Tered? l.asT year we had one enTry who wenT To Champaign To compeTe in The pole vaulT. TENNIS Tennis is a sociable sporT because This is one sporT in which boys may play wiTh girls. AlThough we apparenTly have noT had any girls who could compeTe in meeTs. we have had in The pasT some boys who have done well. During The pasT Tew years a number oT enTries Trom Carbondale CommuniTy l-ligh School have been successTul in The secTional meeTs and have earned The righT To go To Champaign. May There be more Tennis players This spring To use The courTs which have been provided by The communiTy and The school board. AdvanTages which are never Taken mean noThing in our lives. LeT us do our parT To build up inTeresT in an inexpensive game which can be played long aTTer we are ouT oT high school or college. GOLF AlThough our school is noT equipped To oTTer golTing privileges, There are a number oT golf enThusiasTs who like The game and play as much as They possibly can. IT is a sporT which oTFers ouTdoor exercise. Our school has been represenTed in The pasT by CommuniTy High enTries and iT is The hope ThaT we may be again represenTed in disTricT and sTaTe TournamenTs. Men To arms! Men To clubs!
