Update . . . There were many events which took place during the school year that caught everyone's attention- well, almost everyone. Many were newsworthy while others were merely filler stories. While many stories took place abroad, there were just as many on the national and local scene. Abroad . . . TEHRAN- The Shah leaves as a result of much pressure and controversy. He goes on vacation to Palm Springs. The big question now is, Who will run Iran? Prime Minister Shahpour Bakhtiar? The Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini? Riots were still a ma- jor tourist attraction . GUYANA- Congressman Leo Ryan and two aides are gunned down on an airstrip. Reverend lim jones of the People's Temple led his faithful followers in a mass suicide. The death roll reaches over 800. ROME- Pope Paul VI dies in his sleep. Albino Luciani of Venice is elected by the College of Cardinals and becomes Pope lohn Paul. Thirty days later, Pope lohn Paul dies. The Cardinals meet once more to elect a new Pope. Amazingly, they elect a Pole-Karol Wojtyla. He is the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. Oneithou- sand people keep a moonlit vigil waiting for the new Pope. As pontiff, he took his first trip abroad to Mexico. CHINA- The U.S. recognizes China and signs a pact for six exchanges. National . . . Nelson Rockefeller, former Vice-President, suf- fers a heart attack in his mid-town Manhattan office and dies upon arrival to the hospital. Actors Gig Young and Bob Crane are murdered. Ted Lurch Cassidy dies from sugical complications. Billy Car- ter tells the world that he is more popular than his brother jimmy. Billy Beer'f is a success? President Carter gives Patty Hearst her freedom. The last of the Watergate figures is released from prison. Betty Ford gives her face a lift. President Carter still de- livers his fireside chats. Sid Vicious dies of a her- oin overdose. Local .. . Mayor George Mosconi and Supervisor Harvey Milks of San Francisco are both assasinated by former supervisor Dan White. In San Diego, a 16- year old girl goes on a shooting spree and kills two and wounds nine at an elementary school. Los An- geles has more problems with a Skid Row Slasher .
