i .gQ.L. The girls' varsity softball team started off this sea- son very well with a 5-1 win over Valencia. Under the coaching of Kathy Bennet and joan Miller, the young team consisting of seven sophomores, two juniors, and only three seniors has an excellent out- look on the 78-79 season. With such outstanding senior players as Michelle Harlin at first base, Lorie Koontz at right field, and Marcia Mathews at third, the team has high hopes of winning the Century league. The combination of pitcher jamie johnson and catcher Debbie Foldenauer also showed much promise this season. Other players who contributed to a good season were Dena Atkins, Rene Charpen- tier, Rhonda Beckette, Mary Fitzpatrick, Kim Mur- phy, 'Stephanie Tanaka, Teresa West, and Kyla Woods. The junior varsity softball team started their sea- son by smashing Valencia 6-3. Outstanding junior varsity players were julie Ashleigh, Sue Cook, judy jackson, Carrie Levy, and Terri Osier. Coaching this fine team were Vicki Isaacson and Scott Harlin who feel they have a very talented team. 1. Varsity softball team-back row: Coach Miller, R. Beckett, K. Woods, M. Harlin, R. Canyon's varsity girls' track team had principally a rebuilding year since over half of the team were sophomores and only four were seniors. This was the team's first year in the Century league and its first year of 4A CIF competition. Previously, Canyon spent three years in the Orange league and 2A CIF competition, winning league championship twice, once undefeated, and also winning the CIF cham- pionship twice. Those were the only CIF champion- ships ever won by a Canyon sports team- boy or girl! The goal of Canyon track team for the year was to achieve peak performances in league finals, which were held in late April and May. The team hoped to finish in the top half of the league in dual meets and excel in league finals and CIF, which it did. Leading the Comanches to another terrific season were Andi Pernell, Diana Carman, and Lynda Berg. Andi, the defending CIF 220-yard champion, kept the team motivated by her tremendous athletic abilities and her high spirit. Diana Carman, coached by former Canyon star jackie Nelson, showed great promise in the Discus. Lynda Berg, third year varsity track and cross-country runner, led the team in dis- tance events. There is really no difference between boys' and girls' track. The girls put in the same amount of time for practice, worked equally hard, and were equally enthusiastic. Practices for the varsity team were held Monday through Friday from two to four in the afternoon, with occasional individual practices on Saturdays. Field events in which the Comanches partici- pated were shot put, discus, long jump, and high jump. Sprints included the 100-, 200-, 440-yard dis- tance, and 110-yard low hurdles. The track team also proved victorious in the 880-yard, 'I-mile and 2-mile. The Comanche's teamwork paid off in the 440 and 1-mile relay. 1. Striving after her Orange opposition, Mary Galvin exhibits classic Canyon determination. 2. Comanche track athletes as- sume all positions during competition. julie Hayes clears the high jump bar to secure another win for Canyon. 3. Caught in mid air, junior Elke Giesen displays an agile grace even when not clear- ing the high jump bar. 4. julie Hayes flies over the hurdles and heads towards the finish line. 5. 'lUp and over is Diana Car- man's strategy in the high jump. 6. Her face mirroring per- severance and grim determination, Delaine Pierce races against the stopwatch. 5 I- CD E 75 rn FU U7 E 75 'U -l 1' FU I'I'1 l'l'1 l ' CD 239
