4 5 We had many outstanding pre-season perfor- mances, said Coach Don Pycior soon after the 78- 79 season opened for boys' track and field. The var- sity team continued to perform well throughout the season, finishing in the top half of the Century league against such teams as Santa Ana Valley, Villa Park, and El Modena. With a relatively small team of 70, track does not possess a great amount of depth, but makes up for that lack with fine talent, according to coach Harper Ephrom. Dave Ruble 12-milel, Dave Russell 1100,440, and 440 relayl, Rod Spencer 1high jumpl, Larry Hand 18801, and Ken DeShano 1shot putl all have top county marks in their events. Canyon started the season with a firm stride. At the first pre-season meet, the varsity team was edged out by Anaheim, 58-59. However, it came back to defeat Orange soundly at the first league meet, March 8, by a score of 83-53. Missing second place by one point, Canyon garnered third place honors at the Irvine Invitational on March 10. Coach Ephrom stated, We had an excellent crop of sophomores this year. At the Anaheim meet, trackmen Dave Funderburk 1high jumpj, john McMurray 12-milej, Dave Duchene 1220 and 1001, Tony Witsoe 1120 high hurdles and 330 low hur- dlesl, Bill Christian 14401, and Brian Hardwick 1800 and milel placed first in their events, lending a hand in defeating the Colonists, 75-72. 1. Alan Bennetts leads Paul George, Dan Carman, and joe Hsy in the 2-mile at the Orange meet. 2. Coach Don Pycior checks his watch for joe Hsy, stat taker, at the Santa Ana meet. 3. Dave Ruble, followed by sophomore Mike McMurray, sets the pace in the 2-mile. 4. The 120 high hurdles are no obstacle for senior Rod Spencer. 5.
