X K The Comanche soccer team had a very difficult season this year. The team was under the direction of Coach M. Delgadillo and Coach D. Dejbakhsh, The junior varsity soccer team was coached by Mike Carter. The highlight game was against Santa Ana Valley. Goalie Robert Morton, saved twenty-six out of thirty attempts at the goal, in a difficult game which ended 3-4. Canyon played Valencia in the first game of the season. Goalie Tom Shirly played an outstanding game, with twenty-seven out of twenty-eight shots at the goal saved, to tie the score 1-1. Nadar Dejbakhsh and john Beurskins were named Century league first team. Ralph Butz, Rob Morton, Tom Shirly, and Sam Stephens were named Century league second team. Century league honorable mentions went to Ron Snyder, john Borger, and Steve Labrador. Na- der Dejbakhsh, Rob Morton, and john Borger were all named Orange county North-South All Star nominees. The Comanche soccer club awards included: de- fensive varsity player-john Beurskins, and offen- sive player--Nader Dejbakhsh, j.v. defensive player-Carl Dick, j.v. offensive player-lim Schultz, sophomore defensive player-Steve Ambuehl, of- fensive sophomore player-Brett Muiter and Scott Conne was named most improved player. The high scoring soccer test went to David Amirteshami, and the 12th Man award went to Sam Stephens and Ke- vin Eddy. 1. Canyon's varsity soccer team. 2. lohn Borger sneaks a kick against Villa Park opponent. 3. Nader Dejbakhsh makes a side sweep kick. 4. David Meish and an opponent get tangled up in a dribble. 5. Ralph Butz comes up with a good move on the ball. 6. lon Curtner demonstrates a great blocking play. The Comanche baseball team began its year very successfully conquering the University high school Spartans during the scrimmage game. The Com- anches then traveled to Norco. The team had to play on two separate days, however, the game ended up with a disappointing 3-1 loss. Ted Beltran managed to play excellently at second base. The first night game of the year was held at Brookhurst Park where Comanches fell to the Brea Wildcats 3- 1. The most rewarding non-league game was against Indio due to a flat tire on the bus in 90 de- gree weather. The sluggin' Comanches managed to score seven runs while their opponent only scored four. The game also consisted of an ex- cellent double play. Bill Vinovich who was playing catcher, threw to first baseman jeff Smevog for the first out to the play. jeff Smevog then proceeded to throw to Rick Contreras at third to result in a very impressive double play. Canyon them played Bolsa Grande in its last league game beating Bolsa Grande 5-4 in a very exciting game in which many spectators began to view the baseball season. Mike Monnahan pitched very well during the game. The team then began league play in early March having to face the El Modena Vanguards, who were ranked seventh in the county in their first away game. Brian Otten exhibited fine pitching against the Vanguards. The Comanches then managed to hold the Van- guards 9-0 until the seventh inning. Coach Hi La- Valle then decided to put in some of the non-start- ers. The Vanguards managed to gain five runs, but the final score ended up 9-5. Matt Lescault and Tom Oakland both demonstrated outstanding tal- ent at first base. Scot Hayden, Gary Steward, and Larry Smith all did a fantastic job at outfield. The Comanches had an exciting and prosperous year demonstrating many fine baseball players and im- pressive scores. 1. Concentrating intensely, second baseman Ted Beltran tags a Bolsa Grande opponent. 2. Matt Lescault practices determinedly, really getting into the swing of things. 3. With lightning quick hand signs, catcher Bill Vinovich signals the pitcher. 4. Gary Steward and Mike Monnahan demonstrate team work and com- panionship. 5.
