411' ,J 5' 1 It Once again the Comanche Wrestling Team proved itself to be one of the top wrestling pro- grams in Orange County. Completing an overall 12- 4 record, the Comanche's only team losses came at the hands of a state championship and three league championship teams. Completing the league season with a 6-1 record, the Comanche Matmen smashed all opposition in the Century League Tournament by 38 points in the second toughest league in the county and executed a fine job of winning the Century League Cham- pionship. The Comanches placed two champions, two seconds, three thirds, and three fourth place wrestlers to dominate the tournamet. The Com- anche's league record in dual meets was 6-1 with a razor thin loss to El Modena before a jam-packed gym. The Comanches blew the Spartans away 38- 18. By far, the most outstanding performance of the matmen was contributed by junior Tim O'Neil who demolished the old pin team record of 12 by pin- ning 19 opponents. Tim also provided a new scor- ing record of 172 points. Tim O'Neil and Clark Ar- nwine were named League Champions, Tony LaPorte and Tim Brinton provided seconds. Curt Eddy, Garrett Powell, jeff Riddle, and Ned Anthony were all named thirds. Bob Shatney, Paul Ballas, and Mike Rosenthal were honored with fourth place titles. 1. Canyon's Varsity basketball team had a success- ful season despite the young, inexperienced players it had. Seniors Marcia Mathews and Cindy Murphy led the team in scoring and rebounding. Marcia Mathews averaged 22 points a game and was unan- imously chosen most valuable player. Cindy Mur- phy contributed greatly in scoring and was the strongest rebounder on the team. In one game, Ca- nyon dominated and outscored Santa Ana, 72-38. Most Inspirational player was Stephanie Tanaka who never missed a practice all through the season. Stephanie was the only Sophomore on the team all season. Also contributing to a fine season was Donna Poore and Renee Charpentier. These two juniors started all season and helped the team achieve success. Canyon looks forward to a win- ning season next year with its young, experienced returning players. This year's l.V. basketball team were really into the spirit of the game. Although the final tally read 6-8, Coach Karla VanRy felt the girls ended up champions. The outstanding games of the season attested to the girls' skill. The team edged past Tus- tin 32-31, beat Santa Ana Valley 43-39, and killed Santa Ana 33-19. The defensive playing in these games was remarkable. Outstanding players of the season were Michele Martin, Carrie Levy, and P.l. Galvin. Memories of the season include Coach VanRy's favorite sayings OK on the line and Oops, lost my head. All in all the team and Coach VanRy can congratulate themselves on a season filled with pride and skill. As Coach VanRy stated, These are the greatest kids.
