Canyon's Varsity basketball team had a success- ful season despite the young, inexperienced players it had. Seniors Marcia Mathews and Cindy Murphy led the team in scoring and rebounding. Marcia Mathews averaged 22 points a game and was unan- imously chosen most valuable player. Cindy Mur- phy contributed greatly in scoring and was the strongest rebounder on the team. In one game, Ca- nyon dominated and outscored Santa Ana, 72-38. Most Inspirational player was Stephanie Tanaka who never missed a practice all through the season. Stephanie was the only Sophomore on the team all season. Also contributing to a fine season was Donna Poore and Renee Charpentier. These two juniors started all season and helped the team achieve success. Canyon looks forward to a win- ning season next year with its young, experienced returning players. This year's l.V. basketball team were really into the spirit of the game. Although the final tally read 6-8, Coach Karla VanRy felt the girls ended up champions. The outstanding games of the season attested to the girls' skill. The team edged past Tus- tin 32-31, beat Santa Ana Valley 43-39, and killed Santa Ana 33-19. The defensive playing in these games was remarkable. Outstanding players of the season were Michele Martin, Carrie Levy, and P.l. Galvin. Memories of the season include Coach VanRy's favorite sayings OK on the line and Oops, lost my head. All in all the team and Coach VanRy can congratulate themselves on a season filled with pride and skill. As Coach VanRy stated, These are the greatest kids. I wouldn't have traded them for any team in the league. 1. P.l. Galvin races downcourt ahead of opponent and looks for a teammate to pass to. 2. Carrie Levy avoids an opponent while bringing the ball up coun. 3. Stephanie Tanaka makes a quick pass to keep the ball away from her opponent. 4. My IW... The Sophomore Varsity Basketball Team placed second in the Century League, becoming the only basketball team at Canyon to place in the top three of the Century League this year. The team was set into the hands of Coach Dan Brady. It was the first time Coach Brady helped with Canyon's athletic department. The most exciting game of the Sophomore Var- sity team was against Villa Park. Canyon was down by thirteen points after only five minutes of play during the first quarter of the game. At halftime, the Comanches found themselves down by fifteen points. In the second half, the exuberant Com- anches fought back within two points with only six seconds to play. However, the Sophomore team did manage to score the two desperately needed points to tie the game. With momentum in their fa- vor, the Comanches beat the Spartans by six points in overtime. Ron Fardig and Chris Alvario exhibited their ex- cellent shooting ability throughout the season. Brett Scott was considered their playmaker, and he did an excellent job as guard. Rob Alvarado and Ray Larkins displayed great defensive hustle, along with Rene Rodriguez and Augustin DeValle's all out hustle throughout the games. Blair Peterson be- came an excellent backup and showed a fantastic attitude, on and off the court. The Sophomore Varsity Basketball team ended their season with a 10-4-0 league record. The team ended up capturing second place behind league champion, Foothill. The Sophomore IV team, however, did not do quite as well. ln fact, they finished their season with a 2-18-0 record. The high point of their season was the Comanches 51-50 victory over Foothill High. The team was coached by Coach Craig Nance. Coach Nance stated that the team never gave up, even when the team was down by quite a few. Ioel Larson was the high point man throughout the sea- son with 129 points. His game high was 19 points. Scott Siems was named Most Valuable Player. The Most Improved Player was Ed Earl. Matt Lamph was given the title of Team Captain. The Best De- fensive Player went to Ed Haskell. The Sophomore IV Team set an excellent example of good sports- manship as noted by Coach Nance and the other Century League teams. 1. Ioel Larson sets up to Matt Lamph. 2. The Sophomore team stood up to some pretty stiff competition. 3. Robert Kauffelt lets the basketball fly against Orange High. 4. 411' ,J 5' 1 It Once again the Comanche Wrestling Team proved itself to be one of the top wrestling pro- grams in Orange County. Completing an overall 12- 4 record, the Comanche's only team losses came at the hands of a state championship and three league championship teams. Completing the league season with a 6-1 record, the Comanche Matmen smashed all opposition in the Century League Tournament by 38 points in the second toughest league in the county and executed a fine job of winning the Century League Cham- pionship. The Comanches placed two champions, two seconds, three thirds, and three fourth place wrestlers to dominate the tournamet. The Com- anche's league record in dual meets was 6-1 with a razor thin loss to El Modena before a jam-packed gym. The Comanches blew the Spartans away 38- 18. By far, the most outstanding performance of the matmen was contributed by junior Tim O'Neil who demolished the old pin team record of 12 by pin- ning 19 opponents. Tim also provided a new scor- ing record of 172 points. Tim O'Neil and Clark Ar- nwine were named League Champions, Tony LaPorte and Tim Brinton provided seconds.
