i The Comanche Varsity Basketball team faced their toughest season since Canyon High School's genesis. The Comanches began their year with an excellent exhibition in Pre-League games. The Comanches began their season with the Canyon Classic and proceed to win the tournament for the Comanches. The final round of the tournament had Canyon playing Mater Dei High School for the Ca- nyon Classic trophy. The Comanches beat Mater Dei in double overtime, which proved to be one of the most exciting games of the season. ln preseason, the Comanches were 7-3, defeating 3 future CIF contenders. The three losses were all against CIF contenders. The Varsity team also placed in the Brea Tournament. They also beat El Modena to become consolation winners in the George Ingalls Norco!Corona Tourney. The Century League was very competitive and by far the best balanced league in the county. The Comanches lost six league games by a basket or less. The Comanches also had an opportunity to win six games in the fourth quarter except two. The only two league wins were against rival El Modena and Foothill. The Comanches lost to Co-League Champions Santa Ana Valley by one point in an ex- citing overtime game. The most impressive player on the team was Craig Donahue who averaged 22 points in every game. Rod Spencer had one of his most uncom- fortable seasons ending up with quite a few injuries. Seniors Bill Vinovich and jim Quist both helped support the scoring. And two juniors jim Roche and john Hartman both contributed their excellent tal- ents. 1.
