i The Comanche Varsity Basketball team faced their toughest season since Canyon High School's genesis. The Comanches began their year with an excellent exhibition in Pre-League games. The Comanches began their season with the Canyon Classic and proceed to win the tournament for the Comanches. The final round of the tournament had Canyon playing Mater Dei High School for the Ca- nyon Classic trophy. The Comanches beat Mater Dei in double overtime, which proved to be one of the most exciting games of the season. ln preseason, the Comanches were 7-3, defeating 3 future CIF contenders. The three losses were all against CIF contenders. The Varsity team also placed in the Brea Tournament. They also beat El Modena to become consolation winners in the George Ingalls Norco!Corona Tourney. The Century League was very competitive and by far the best balanced league in the county. The Comanches lost six league games by a basket or less. The Comanches also had an opportunity to win six games in the fourth quarter except two. The only two league wins were against rival El Modena and Foothill. The Comanches lost to Co-League Champions Santa Ana Valley by one point in an ex- citing overtime game. The most impressive player on the team was Craig Donahue who averaged 22 points in every game. Rod Spencer had one of his most uncom- fortable seasons ending up with quite a few injuries. Seniors Bill Vinovich and jim Quist both helped support the scoring. And two juniors jim Roche and john Hartman both contributed their excellent tal- ents. 1. Rod Spencer attempts to snatch a jump ball from an opponent. 2. Craig Donahue attempts to make another two points against a tough Orange High team. 3. lohn Hartman quickly looks for a team member to help out in an uncomfortable situation. 4. Il rt-I As the season progressed, Canyon's varsity field hockey team had its eye on a trip to CIF. Their last game of the season against Foothill decided whether they went as a second place or third place team. The Varsity responded to the occasion and tied Foothill 0-0, giving them a second place playoff berth. Throughout the season the team was led by Michelle Harlin and Stephanie Brown. Canyon did not make it to CIF because of these two girls, it was a team effort. Led by coach Sharon Pietrock's fa- vorite quote, it's not the winning that counts, what counts is trying, they tried very hard as the first Comanche field hockey team to go CIF in Canyon's history. Canyon finished second in the Century League to a tough Tustin team. Outstanding offen- sive work was done by Natalie Harlow, Anne Smode, and Andi Pernell. Most improved player was junior julie Hayes. Coach Pietrok was also very pleased with all of her first year players who added to make it such a great season. The team lost in the first round of CIF to Edison O-2 who has been in CIF many times before. The IV field hockey team finished league with a record of 2-3-2 under the coaching of Vicki Isaac- son. Outstanding- offensive work was done by Kristy Hirsch and Eileen Brady. Outstanding de- fense players were Kim Campbell, Suzanne Cook, and Tammy Dorhout, who all contributed to a sea- son record of 2-2-6. 1. Varsity Hockey Team- Back Row: A. Smode, A. Pernell, N.
