'MA ll SI Concluding with a season of six wins and six losses, Canyon's swim team had a substantial sec- ond year. Under the coaching of Ted Ondracek and Steve Anderson, Dale Turner qualified for CIF diving competition, the first Canyon swimmer to do so. Other outstanding season performances in- cluded senior Chuck Lay who set four individual records, among them the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. Additionally, senior Ron Cheser broke all Canyon records in the 200-yard individual medley, a combination of butterfly, backstroke, breastst- roke, and freestyle. Cheser was also one of the four swimmers who set Canyon's new 400-yard team medley relay, along with Vaughn johnson, Wayne Ozaki, and jim Marion. Since only four seniors-Ron Cheser, Ron Gil- lespie, Chuck Lay, and Dale Taylor-will be leaving, coaches Ondracek and Anderson look forward to next season as a culmination of the past season's groundwork and training. 1. Bent in readied determination, senior Chuck Lay prepares to face his opposition-the quick-moving hand of the stop watch. 6. Pacing himself against his teammates, Kirk Stafford's face mirrors the grim determination necessary for aquatic success. 7. Hanging ten on the starting block, junior Bill Brauberger awaits the starter's gun. Il rt-I As the season progressed, Canyon's varsity field hockey team had its eye on a trip to CIF. Their last game of the season against Foothill decided whether they went as a second place or third place team. The Varsity responded to the occasion and tied Foothill 0-0, giving them a second place playoff berth. Throughout the season the team was led by Michelle Harlin and Stephanie Brown. Canyon did not make it to CIF because of these two girls, it was a team effort. Led by coach Sharon Pietrock's fa- vorite quote, it's not the winning that counts, what counts is trying, they tried very hard as the first Comanche field hockey team to go CIF in Canyon's history. Canyon finished second in the Century League to a tough Tustin team. Outstanding offen- sive work was done by Natalie Harlow, Anne Smode, and Andi Pernell. Most improved player was junior julie Hayes. Coach Pietrok was also very pleased with all of her first year players who added to make it such a great season. The team lost in the first round of CIF to Edison O-2 who has been in CIF many times before. The IV field hockey team finished league with a record of 2-3-2 under the coaching of Vicki Isaac- son. Outstanding- offensive work was done by Kristy Hirsch and Eileen Brady. Outstanding de- fense players were Kim Campbell, Suzanne Cook, and Tammy Dorhout, who all contributed to a sea- son record of 2-2-6. 1. Varsity Hockey Team- Back Row: A. Smode, A. Pernell, N.
