2 The Sophomore team started its season off with a forfeit from Santa Ana. Although Canyon's runners ran alone in their race, impressive times were made by all members, At the Dana Hills Invitational, the sophomores ran a two-mile course instead of the regular three-mile. The team then ran at the Costa Mesa Invitational. Though not scoring highly as a team, individual standouts were made by john McMurray, Steve Cua, and Bill Christian. In league meets, the team was faced with stiff competition from El Modena, Santa Ana Valley, and Canyon's rival, Villa Park. Taking seventh in League finals proves how hard the competition was for the Soph- omore team. In the Century League, the team was faced with many tough schools. The team was very underrated by opposing schools, and this did not help their confidence much. But, how- ever, the team did score very well in their first game against Capistrano Valley. The team then went on to win four more games, and then finally losing to Villa Park. Although the team lost many fine seniors last year, returning lettermen were seniors Chuck Lay and Kevin Kiene, and juniors Paul Ballas and Kirk Staf- ford. Headed by Coach Ted Ondracek, the Varsity team ended their season with many great victories, and a season record of 14 wins, 5 losses. Paul Ballas made league, and receiving Honorable Mention was Ron Che- ser. The Varsity players finished fourth in their league. The Sophomore team ended their season with 7 wins and 4 losses. 1. Brian Day keeps a sharp eye on the ball. 2. Mike McCormick struggles to keep possession of the ball. 3. A good defensive goal by Roger Morris. 4. Eluding an ag- gressivef opponent is Brian Day as he shoots a point for Canyon. 5. Going for a long shot is jimmy Robinson. 5 5 1' cn I I :IN fi LH l H DN El .LN fi AEI EIT 'Elfi
