The Varsity Cross Country team was faced with stiff com- petition with their debut in the Century League. To start the season off right, Coach Don Pycior took the top experi- enced runners to a beach camp in San Clemente. After run- ning an average of 50 miles that week, each team member was prepared for the cross-country season. The Varsity's first league meet against Santa Ana proved the Canyon Har- riers to be tough. The Seniors placed fourth at the Pacifica Invitational, with Dave Ruble and Mike McMurray winning fine trophies. At the Dana Hills Invitational, an excellent second place by the seniors brought a trophy home to Ca- nyon. The Varsity then had another impressive fourth place win at the Costa Mesa Invitational. Although the Varsity did not score highly against powerhouses Foothill and Tustin, they did manage to have a great comeback against Santa Ana Valley. At the Mt. Sac Invitational, Dave Ruble took second place, with over a hundred runners in the race. A tri- meet against Villa Park and Orange saw Canyon defeat Or- ange. Outstanding runners for the season were seniors Dave Ruble and Mike McMurray, and junior joel Atkin. The Varsity team placed fifth at League Finals. s .sm N. . vi. .M u., :-A' :H '3t.-l.::- ' 1if'.. - -r 190 2 - ,nt ri flats- A 3
