Canyon began their sixth season in one of the toughest leagues in the county-the Century League. The team opened their season un- der the direction of Coach Mike Zeller. The team began their season with an upset game defeating Edison 24-20. The next week the fired-up Comanches beat Garden Grove in their first away game. The Comanches opened their league play against Orange in a 13-0 shutout game. Ieff Smevog and Ned Anthony demonstrated the Red Man Defense . The homecoming game was played against Santa Ana. Canyon won the game 10-7. Canyon's first loss was to Valley. The final score was 6-15. The Comanche defense held off scoring by Villa Park. This became Canyon's only tie game. Excellent defense by Scott Hayden and Gary Stewart was observed by a large crowd. Canyon just couldn't keep Tustin from scoring in the last quarter after dominating the first half. Advancing with another win, Marc Rueckert scored the lone touchdown in the last two minutes against Foothill. The Canyon defense went on the warpath in their last league game against El Modena. The Comanches fell to the Vanguards, 14-0. During that weekend the Comanches were picked as the CIF wild card. Canyon weasled their way to a stunning victory against Cypress 14-7, in the CIF playoffs. Bill Vinovich and Herb Brohn stopped Cypress from scoring in the last four seconds. Canyon then went on to another victory in the quarter-finals against La Quinta. Canyon defeated the Aztecs 28-13. Ken DeShano dis- played excellent power plays. The final game for the Comanches was the Canyon-El Mo rematch in the semi-finals. Canyon had a tough night, fumbling on the kickoff and the Vanguards recovered it on the 20-yard line. Pete Delgadillo and ElMo's quarterback, Bob Frasco, were ejected from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct. El Modena beat Canyon 21-0, leaving Canyon's record 7-4-1. The Vanguards won the CIF Southern Conference title the following weekend. 1. Ted Beltran attempts a first clown against the Spartans. 2. Ieff Smevog makes an impressive tackle. 3.
