Starting practices in June, the 1978-79 Drill Team was able to demonstrate their excellence by giving outstanding performances at UCSB Drill Team Camp where they received Second, Third, and Su- perior trophies. Early mornings started on the sec- ond day of school in preparation for the team's first pep assembly, pregame warmup, and halftime show. The two shows following this featured the music Ease on Down the Road and Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz. Two weeks of hard work ended in rain on the eve of the last scheduled performance. For this reason the team missed the chance to execute their surprise splits. Football halftimes not being enough to keep them busy, the Drill Team also marched in five parades including Chino, Arcadia, National City, Grange-May, and a special perfor- mance at Magic Mountain. Keeping with the holi- day spirit, the girls entertained members of the stu- dent body at the last pep rally for 1978. 1979 brought more halftime shows with the start of bas- ketball season. Perhaps the most memorable was the Date Dad halftime where fathers also received an opportunity to display their talent. The highlight of the year, however, was the Precision Team's per- formance at Miss Drill Team U.S.A. in Santa Mon- ica. Even though the girls were very tired by this time, Spring Show was just around the corner. farch 30 and 31 brought the year to a close with two more spectacular shows. 1. The group's success is a result of her encouragement, advice, support, and guidance. 7. The hardworking members of the journalism staff strive to meet deadlines in putting out publications of the Smoke Signal every three weeks. Being on the newspaper staff is not just an easy class like many people think, states news editor Sonya Ekes, The new journalism advisor, Mrs. Hopkins, encour- ages the students to be independent and to show initiative in publishing the newspaper. Students had to carry on editorial responsibilities and labor under the absence of Mrs. Hopkins during her maternity leave. Canyon students enjoy the challenges of writing articles and actually seeing their results, editor-in-chief Keary Kubista reports. The staff has the potential to put out an exceptionally good pa- per, comments Kent Kubista, exchange editor.
