6 Q Canyon's chapter of the American Field Service is one of the most active groups on campus. Under the direction of Mrs. Irene Panagotacos, this organization aided and promoted cultural development during the 1978-1979 year. One of the most important services AFS provided was the sponsorship of a foreign ex- change student. This year AFS sponsored Monica Bull-Simonsen, an exchange student from Sweden. Not only did AFS provide funds for Monica, they aided her with friend- ship and support during her stay in the United States. Another major activity AFS organized was Inter- national Weekend. During this event AFS invited for- eign exchange students from other schools to Canyon to share experiences. To fund these activities, AFS held numerous bake sales throughout the year. A delicious array of goodies satisfied not only AFS financial needs, but hungry Comanches as well. The purpose of the National Honor Society is to give special recognition to Canyon's honor students. To qualify a student must maintain a 3.5 G.P.A. and be elected to membership by the faculty. Election is based upon the student's service, leadership, and character at Canyon High. The NHS consists of 44 seniors, 73 juniors, and plans to induct about 80 sophomores during spring session. The National Honor Society officers include: Presi- dent Sue Busse, Vice President David Burke, Secretary Robin Burke, and Treasurer Suzy Gibson. GAA is a club composed of all the girls involved in athletics at Canyon. The advisor for the third year in a row is Linda Smith and the officers are: President Ann Smode, Vice Presi- dent Diana Carmen, and Secretary julie Hayes. The sports played this year came in each quarter, Fall, Winter, and Spring. GAA holds desserts and ban- quets so the girls may receive their awards. Fall sports include volleyball, tennis, and cross country. Winter sports are hockey and basketball, Spring sports are track and field, softball, swimming, and gymnastics. Each team gives three awards. The girls vote on who should receive the most improved and the most im- spirational. The coaches decide which athlete is the most valuable. The membership in GAA is formed from a board of representatives from the various sports, along with the officers. The board sponsored moneymakers to fi- nance the banquets and increase morale among Girls' athletics. 1.
