Beginning the season with a 9-1 victory over Norco, the jV baseball team went on to win four of five pre-season games. In the very first game, Ken DeShano pitched all the way, while Gary Stewart hit a grand slam, bringing victory. Leading hitters were Brian Otten, Gary Stew- art, and jim Roche. Brian Otten also led with five extra base hits, and the leading pitchers were jerry Hart, jim Roche, Brian Otten, and Ken DeShano, who caused 27 strike-outs in 'I6 in- nings, The team also won its first two league games with Sonora 6-3 and La Habra 7-2. Coach Lance Dinwiddie declared, So far, it's the most bal- anced team l've ever had. With Larry Smith play- ing part time with the jV's, we may take league. To help substantiste his hopes, the team's batting average after pre-season was .293 with seven players over 300. A wrap-up of the balance of the season appears in teh SPRING SUPPLE- MENT. Captained by Rob Morton, the sophomore baseball team began the '78 season, winning four of five pre-season games too, defeating Sonora in the first league competition by the spectacular score of 24-0. Coach john Ostile credited this success to a well-balanced team with strong pitching, a smooth defense, and a powerful of- fense. By this first league game, jim Dierker, Keith Pregler, and Pat Sharpe had developed into strong pitchers, and first baseman, Matt Lescault, was on the way to breaking three team records. jim Dierker had six stolen bases and had a pitch- ing record of three wins and one loss. jeff Sim- mons, the most versatile player, had really sparked the offensive attack, backed by Rob Morton. ln the first league game against Sonora, jim Dierker allowed only five hits and zero runs, and the defense had no errors. The offense had 16 hits and scored 24 runs. Another overall strength of this team was the second string that was also very strong and lent the support needed for a winning season.
