W 9 W QM Following a summer of frantic prepara- tion the Sophomore Varsity Basketball Team faced the tough Orange League. ln preleague action Canyon had a split record of 4-3 highlighted by a consolation cham- pionship in the Canyon Sophomore Bas- ketball Classic over Christmas vacation. In the first round of league play Canyon was 5-2 losing only to La Habra and to eventual league champion El Dorado. The first round action was highlighted by a one point come-from-behind victory over Va- lencia 45-44. Good first round perfor- mances were turned in by playmaking guard jeff Duran, forward Sherm Donegan, Matt Lescault, and center Mike Kauffelt. Af- ter an early start Dave Lewis came on strong as the fifth starter with excellent bench play from Super Subs Tony Hart- ridge and Bob Scheifele. In the second round Canyon fought to average its earlier losses and in a ferocious see-saw battle, Canyon dropped a heartbreaker to El Do- rado 57-55. Canyon won its remaining games enroute to a 11-3 league record and 2nd place in the Orange League. The season was a rough one for the Sophomore reserves who played freshman teams in the League. The highlights of the season includedi two league wins over El Dorado and the best game of the season, an overtime win over Brea. The jV's played good defense and shot well against Brea. 1.
