I HER When league play began, Canyon opened up a 34-24 half-time lead and went on to beat a strong El Dorado team, 61-51 through balanced scoring. Gary Hilton led the way scoring 15 points and was ably as- sisted by Carlos Cuero scoring 11 points and Rick Wheeler supplying 10 points. Next the team went to La Habra, where Gary Hilton put on quite an offensive show scor- ing 32 points, and went on to beat the Highlanders 71-70. At home Canyon and Valencia were tied for first with 4-1 records, but the Running Comanches, behind good offensive and defensive rebounding from leff Smevog and Rick Wheeler, upended the Tigers 83-76. Traveling to Brea, it was believed that Brea and Canyon would be tied at the end of regulation since both teams entered the game tied in the Orange League with 9-2 records. Brea won the Orange Title contest 11-4 putting the Wildcats in 1st place with two games to play. Canyon went into the Va- lencia gym hoping to win an important game, but knowing not many teams leave victorious. This night was different. Canyon came away with a solid 85-71 win. The fast- moving Comanches displayed fine team work to record their victory. Dave Fremont moved the ball up the court and Craig Do- nahue, Gary Hilton, Carlos Cuero, and jeff Smevog handled the scoring drive. At So- nora, this was the final game for seniors Carlos Cuero, Rick Wheeler, Dave Fre- mont, Doug Price, Mike Thibert, Brian Sie- gel, Fred Seguin, Scott Ferguson, Scott Har- lin, Richard Tenchka, Gary Hilton and manager Steve White. They put on quite a show, taking a 53-22 half-time lead and couting to a 87-54 win. The Comanches did not know that across the freeway Valencia was defeating Brea to give the Comanches their first Orange League Title. lt was now off to the CIF 3A playoff and first oppo- nent, San Clemente. The results of the play- offs may be found in the Spring Supple- ment. 1. Dave Fremont displays his excellent form. 2. Cary Hilton takes a jump shot against Edison. 3. Driving in all alone is jeff Smevog. 4. Craig Donahue attempts an outside shot against Edison. 5. The team groups to- gether to discuss more strategy. 6. Driving in for the basket, Carlos Cuero takes a jump shot. 7. Brian Seigel attempts a free throw shot against Valencia. 8. Rick Wheeler shoots over a Valencia player. 236 .- 2 t -i l I . - wt ill .i,. , l ' -- Q, 'ir me . .-,.. ....k..........Ai.i,... . . I ffii' J ' V .Qi -A v It 531571, i.'llifflil Q ' twirl 1 1 ' an!
