MOCK 5 v taxati--T Qfllllll UIQUEIKS Canyon High School's young, but enthusiastic, Varsity Field Hockey team tied for third in the Orange League for the '77-78 season. A strong offensive line was led by three year letteiwomen: seniors Val Linn, Most Valuable: Quinetta Turner, Best Offense, and Sheryl Bellock. Mainstay of the defense was junior Michelle Harlin, flanked by sophomore halfbacks, Stephanie Brown Most lmproved and Natalie Harlow. Canyon started out slow offensively and lost all three opening practice games against other Orange Unified District schools. However, after the LAFHA Sportsday, Canyon was on the move, racking up a 2-1-1 record for the day against aggressive teams. Highlights of Orange League action was in the second round against Esperanza when Canyon fought to an im- pressive 3-1 lead over the Aztecs. After being down 1-0 at halftime, Canyon came back to score on a penalty stroke and on two break- aways by Sheryl Bellock and Val Linn late in the second period. Keri Woods was Most lnspirationalg she at- tended every game and- cheered the rest of the team even though she was kept out of com- petition because of three injuries. Outstanding statistics for the season include: Sheryl Bellock scored 6 goals, 2 assists, Val Linn scored 6 goals, 4 assists, Quinetta Turner scored 1 goal, 3 assists, Michelle Harlin, Best Defense, had 36 tackles, 82 interceptions, Stephanie Brown, had 23 tackles, 43 interceptions. The League record was 3-5-2 ties which Canyon won on penetration time. 1. Girls Field Hockey team shows super spirit- in an after- game cheer. 2. Quinetta Turner works with great intensity to steal the ball. 3. Michelle Harlin steals the ball from a Sonora player. 4. Girls' Hockey Team- Front Row: Michelle Stellhorn, Val Linn, Stephanie Brown, Medina Dietrich, Debbie Wolfelt, Sheila Armstrong, Middle Row: Quinetta Turner, Anne Smode, Natalie Harlow, Sheryl Bellock, Lisa Salazar, Mary Haynes, Sheila Sweeney, judy Edwards, Back Row: Coach Vicki Isaacson, Michelle Harlin, Rhonda Hargett, Brina Die- trich, Debbie Foldenauer, Lorna Hurshman, Sue Foldenauer, Coach Vickie Ritter. 5. Orange League opponents find it hard to score with Rhonda Hargett in the goal cage. 6. Michelle Stellhorn and Stephanie Brown complete a reverse stick dodge. 233
