5.1: -- ,,,, V Q X -i i A Z X R I0 UMLUEEYI B lfl Ml TTI' The Canyon Girls Varsity Volleyball team had their most successful year in the school s history Beginning in September with wins over Villa Park El Modena and Troy during pre league games the appropriately named Wild Bunch entered league play as a strong favorite to gain possible CIF playoff berth As the weeks went by the Bunch began to mold into a sophisticated team With a second play finish in the prestigious Westminister Tour nament Canyon entered league play Led by Se niors janet Waterbury janet Kraft and janet Gacta the Comanches became Orange League Champions with a 13 1 record CIF playoffs found Canyon beating Warren and Corona before losing to the eventual CIF Champion Santa Fe 15 7 715 14 16 juniors Cindy Murphy Marsha Mathews Olga Martinez and jackie Eastburn rounded out the starting line-up and with each game became more responsible for Canyon s success. Both janet Waterbury and janet Kraft were named All-Orange League with janet Waterbury named most valuable player. This year was a building year for the jV volley- ball team. There were no returning players so the new sophomore and junior players spent their time developing skills and strategies. jamie johnson was an outstanding sophomore adding to the team effort with her spiking and serving ability. Natalie Harlow another sophomore strenghtened the team with her all around ability. All the team members improved immensely and the final season record of 5 and 8 did not reflect the quality of play. 1. Varsity players listen intently to Coach Andrea. 2. A spike is janet Waterbury s way of getting it over the net. 3. The var- sity team shows the coordinated teamwork that brought them to C.I.F. 4.
