Q Emi -EE E ln the second year of their existence, the girls' varsity cross-country team successfully defended their Orange League Championship title with their second consecutive undefeated season. Again, Valencia proved to be the toughest com- petition, but the girls' superior training and en- durance paid off. For twelve weeks during the summer, the girls ran an' average of 40 and 50 miles a week and worked out with weights three to five times each week. Under the guidance of Co-Captains Susan leffereys and Lynda Berg, each girl adhered to an individualized training program set up by Coach Mike Sayward. The Most Valuable Varsity runner this season was Kim Vollmer, who also was voted the Or- ange League Most Valuable Runner, followed closely in the voting by her teammate ludy Steese. The junior varsity team also finished unde- feated and showed impressive depth and strength, while the sophomore team, in their first year of running, finished the season in fine form, taking second place in the sophomore division of the prestigious Mt. Sac. Invitational. The Most Valuable Sophomore runner was Pat Garcez, and the whole team makes Canyon's girls' cross- country future look very bright. 1.
