The addition of this sport has been quite an education for Comanches, many still don't understand all those whistles, flags, and fouls. But that didn't matter when Canyon's var- sity water polo team played and won their first game, which was against Capistrano Valley High, 12-7. Canyon had hoped that the entire season would govas well as their first game, but they ended with a record of three wins and twelve losses. Coach Ted Ondracek was very satisfied with their first season, and commented that without the help of Seniors Mike Edwards, Roy Hen- negan, Steve Cox, Brandon Powell, and Bill Boyle, many teams would have pushed Canyon all around the pool. Mike Edwards ended up as the third leading scorer, in addition to being a good defensive player, and Kevin Kiene was named the most valuable defensive player of the year. Goalie Ross Herman added a lot of credit- ability to Canyon's program with his sound back- ground and experience in water polo. The Sophomore record didn't reflect a positive note, but since six of the Sophomores played on the Varsity level this season, their experience should be a big asset to the team next season. The most outstanding offensive player on the varsity team was sophomore Paul Ballas, who contributed 51 percent of the total offensive scoring with his 41 goals. Kirk Stafford and Rob Morton started at least half of the varsity games, along with sophomores Mark Maietta, Mark Schulter, and Scott Townley. All in all, we got our first season off the ground, we're developing a fine team, and can afford to be philosophical the first year. After all, you win a few, you lose a few.. . , concluded Coach Ondracek. 1. Coach Ted Ondracek gets a little suntan before going into the pool. 2. The Sophomore Water Polo Team. M. Maietta, S. UMQIUIIQ UEF UBUB WIYUE SS Despite competition from incoming soph- omore Collette Billington, number one varsity singles player Val Linn managed to hold her posi- tion for most of the tennis season. Playing on Ca- nyon's varsity team for her third year, Val proved to be one of the most experienced girls on the team. Gaining experience was surely the goal of number two player Colette Billington, as both team members finished the season with a good record and advanced as far as the quarter-finals during league competition. ln the latter part of the season, the number one doubles position was filled by Diana Car- man and jackie Nelson. These girls were able to accomplish a remarkable amount of wins for the short amount of time they were partners. Some other outstanding team members were singles players lanine Yamamoto and Anne Thi- bert, plus doubles players Deanna Doyle, Ingrid Rekte, Charlotte Byron, Lisa Runels, Lori Scallon, and Andy Pernell. All girls contributed to the 5-9 season record, ending another enjoyable term of competition for Canyon's girls' varsity tennis team. One of the most valuable girls on Canyon's ju- nior varsity tennis team was Robin Burke. Losing only six of her total sets played, Robin contrib- uted greatly to the team's 12-5 season record. Both doubles teams were another asset to the ju- nior varsity. These girls, Patty McGuire, Karen Duncan, Lisa Waggoner, and julie Hayes im- proved steadily throughout the season. Other ju- nior varsity team members were: Cheryl Pryor, Sonia Miser, Cindy Hayes, Teri Brown, Alisa Kammerier, Denise Short, Teresa Carroll and Diane Blume. 1. Lisa Waggoner and lulie Hayes go to the net to shake hands with their opponent after an easy victory over Sonora. 2. Andy Pernell anxiously awaits a serve. 3. Girls' Tennis Team-Front Row: S.
