E I I The varsity cross-country season began with a unique night-time invitational against Mayfair. The two-mile race was run on the track during the halftime of the Canyon-Mayfair football game. Despite the 33-25 loss by the varsity team, winning spirits prevailed for the upcoming in- vitational. In the Dana Hills Invitational the var- sity, led by senior Dean Hartshorn, placed fourth. Following wins over Esperanza 128-295 and Brea Q22-373, the Comanche Harriers trav- eled to the Costa Mesa Invitational where junior Dave Ruble and senior Dean Hartshorn led the way to a third place finish in a double dual meet. Another double dual meet witnessed losses by Canyon to Sonora 34-22 and La Habra 44-18. ln the Orange County and Mt. Sac lnvitationals, Ca- nyon took on the largest and strongest schools in Southern California. The team then went on to place eighth and sixth among forty schools. In the last double dual meet against La Habra and Fullerton, the varsity lost 30-26 to La Habra and tied Fullerton 28-28. Despite a 3-4 record, the team went into league finals finishing in an im- pressive 3rd place. 1. After an exhilarating exhilarating race, Larry Hand takes a big breath. 2. A tiring Fred Vinton crosses the finish line. 3. Scott Foster, a standout for the varsity squad, paces every step. 4. The Varsity Cross-Country team: Bill Richardson, Dean Hartshorn, Bill Holley, Scott Foster, Fred Vinton, larry Hand, Dave Ruble, and Ralph Gonzales. 5. Tony La Porte strides himself to an early lead. 6. Ralph Gonzales relaxes al- ter a long three miles. 7. Coming in for a first place finish is Dean Hartshorn. 217

ill?f-QE? I The junior Varsity Harriers started the season off with a 15-16 win over Mayfair, taking the first five places in the competition. In the first league dual meet against Esperanza, Canyon took the first four places as well as sixth. In the next league meet, Canyon's junior Varsity ran over Brea by a score of 15-60, again taking the first five places. ln their first double dual meet, against Sonora and El Dorado, Canyon beat El Dorado 22-29, but lost to Sonora 35-23. Against Valencia, the Harriers took the first five places for the third time in the season and ran by Valen- cia, 15-50. Nearing the season's end, the j,V.'s beat La Habra 15-50, but then lost to Fullerton. Canyon went to league finals, and after the tough competition was over, they came out with a fourth place finish, thus ending a good season for the junior Varsity team. The Sophomore Cross-Country team kicked off the season with a 21-35 win over Mayfair. In Orange League competition, Canyon lost the first two dual meets to Esperanza and Brea. But the Comanches quickly bounced back to beat Sonora 27-32, after losing to El Dorado 29-27, and Valencia 48-17. After this, the Harriers, led by joe Atkin, Ralph Butz, and Ken Shedarowich, took two 1-5 places against La Habra and Full- erton. ln invitational play, the Sophomores fin- ished first at Dana Hills, third at Costa Mesa, eighth at Orange County and fifth place at Mt. Sac. In league finals, the Sophomores also took fourth place. 'l. Ron Ossenberg pushes hard to cross the finish line. 2. Brett Milton and Tony Talamantes lead the way over Brea. 3.
