tBlJ'll63 l!0fI3'StW.lQ fl'E'l!liiWlE The 1977 sophomore football team completed Canyon's most successful season in the school's short history with a perfect 9-0 record. The soph- omores became Canyon's first Orange League champions, leaving the league with impressive statistics. Canyon's season opened at home against Mayfair High. The frustrated Monsoon defense watched as Glen Veevart and Brad Strahefr scored three times and Mike Rosenthal's field goal set the Comanches' league tempo with a 23-0 shutout. Next, the Sophomores traveledf to Villa Park, where the Comanches' defenseial- lowed Villa Park only nine opportunities to score in the first half. ln the third quarter, an infer- ception by john Hartman increased Canyon's lead to 14-6. Quarterback john Dunn kept the game moving offensively and Canyon beat the Spartans for the first time, 21 -6. During the Sophomores' first league game, Matt Lescault intercepted two passes against So- nora and the Comanches' offense crushed the Raiders 36-0. jim Roche passed to jim Dierker and jeff Simmons, while Brad Strahler and Glen Veevart led the running attack. The La Habra game was no contest as Canyon's Sophomores defeated them 40-0. Outstanding teamwork continued into the third week of league games as a strong Brea team fell to the Comanches 27- 0. El Dorado was the next team to travel to Ca- nyon, in an attempt to capture the Orange League title for the sixth time. lt was a tough cle- fense game for both sides and with 55 seconds left to play, Canyon took an intentional safety to capture a 7-2 win. The Comanches then went on to beat Valencia by 14 points, allowing them to score only 13 points. In the final game, the Soph- omore Comanches showed Esperanza what being number one was all about, as outstanding plays by jeff Dura, Bob Scheifele, jim Gifford, and jerry LaGrone led the way to a 33-O victory. The season closed with Canyon's sophomores winning their ninth straight victory, the Orange League championship, and future opportunities to be even more successful. 'l.
