Art: a Show of Talent lt has been said that Man cannot live on bread alone. The same was true for CDO students. Straight subjects just weren't enough-Fine Arts added the touch that made academics more interesting. Solid classes all day long would be too dull, said one student. Many teachers agreed that art, drama, and music were neces- sary parts of a balanced education. Adding to the general school spirit, the drama department put on several memorable performances during the year. There's something about getting out there in front of everyone, that's really exciting, said one person. Music, too, gave students a chance to show off for their friends. One student com- mented, Everyone really looks forward to those lunchtime performances by the jazz ensemble and the Canyon Singers. Fine Arts were a vital part of CDO, an addition that made a big differ- ence in the students' attitudes. Picture 1, Band members line up for a performance. Picture 2, Just goofing around. Picture 3, Mike Franznick shows how to paste up an art piece. Picture 4, Three Choir members are distracted from their lessons. Picture 5, Brad Johnson and Brenda Crawford demonstrate music, the universal language of the world. Picture 6, Senior Chris Dunn catches his breath while waiting to play another tune. 26! The Advantage of a Language Foreign Languages gave students a better view of the world around them by teaching languages and customs of foreign countries. One student said, l learned a lot in this class, not only how to speak, but a lot about other customs and coun- tries. Studying a foreign language took a great deal of time and effort. Each person had to look at things in other ways than their own. One stu- dent said, When I was in Spanish class I had to think of myself as being Mexican. Some stu- dents took Foreign Languages because they wanted to go to college and most colleges require at least one year of Foreign Language. Others took Foreign Languages because they thought it was a good idea to know more than just English. One student said, l recommend that students take a foreign language. My reason for this is that they can enrich their vocabulary and understand- ing of other languages. Picture 1, Herr Gavitt and students show just how friendly German people can be. Picture 2, Senora Fisher dreams on. Picture 3, Mr. LoMaglio talks with student Eden Berlat. Pic- ture 4, Senorita Haas takes a moment to consult resources.
