I Getting Your Point Across We're trying to make the speech program I the best in the state, and l think we are close to it. These were the opening words of Debate coach Pete Siedl. The Debate team was composed of mostly new Frosh and Sophomore students. Siedl later stated, We will have a real strong team next year because most members will be returning. Unfortunately the team will be losing our outstanding first place Speaker Award win- ner, Milton Lewin. Debate expanded its program to include oral interpretation of lit- erature and impromptu speaking. Mr. Siedl finished by commenting, Debate gives members a chance to improve upon their speaking abilities, and to compete in a sport that is non-athletic and part of the Arizona interscholastic Association. 53 fa 1 l Ml Wm n,.1.,,...,.,w ,.,, . ss3'i? Chess: Action, Thought, Skill CDO had a very representative team and we think that we are in the top three chess teams of the state, explained coach Al Cor- tez. The lower chess team members had inspiration and leadership from the Senior members, Team Captain Pat Cray, John Cox, Kent Kearney and Jim Cerny.. They also had help from Sophomores Chris Mon- rad and John Niec, and two super Frosh members Matt Cannon and Tad Pacholo- zyk. The team brought home several tro- phies including a First place from Glendale, a Second place from FIagstaff's Invitational, and a Third place rating in the Tucson Open. ln league play CDO finished with 5 wins, no losses, and one draw. One team member commented, l feel that in the future our team will become stronger and stronger. Picture 1, Rick Walk grins as he takes his opponent's knight.
