We’ve solved problems, shared friendships, and enjoyed good times. When personal tragedies struck, we held together. The things that we have learned here will prepare us to become members of our community. As we reflect on our days at Canton South, we can see the many individuals who have helped us. If each of us could choose just one person who has helped us through a trying time or who has shared a meaningful moment with us, whom would we select? A parent? A teacher? A neighbor? To name one individual would be impossible. Therefore, it is only fitting and proper that we dedicate this yearbook to the community of Canton Township. Since the beginning of Canton Township High School in 1931, students have turned to the community for help and support. The community has always given their best (effort) to see that their young people would have the skills, knowledge, and life experience needed for adulthood. Thank you. Canton Township, for putting your faith in us. As we now join the ranks of adult community members, we hope that we can continue your honored tradition of caring and dedication toward home and family. You have accomplished great things here, and we know that you will continue to do so in the future. HARRIET STEIN METZ WARSTLER Do you remember having a problem and then walking into the guidance office? The gentle lady that greeted you with a smile was Mrs. Harriet Warstlcr. She was the first secretary to be hired for the guidance office, and she has remained in that position for twenty-two years. Mrs Warstler is a graduate of McKinley High School and attended Kent State University. While attending Kent, she decided to change from a career in education to one in business. She then enrolled at Canton Actual Business College and graduated from the secretarial program. By accepting a position as a secretary in the guidance department at Canton South, she felt that she had achieved both of her desires. education and business. Family life is very important to Mrs. Warstler. She has a son and daughter, both mamed. and four lovely grandchildren. Her son. James, and her husband. Carl, are deceased. Throughout her years as a wife, mother, and grandmother, she has derived strength and guidance from her deep faith in God. She is affiliated with the Emmanuel Christian Church. When asked about her work at Canton South Mrs. Warstlcr said. There was never a dull moment!' She also said that she enjoyed working with everyone at South, and she especially cryoyed the varied personalities of the students. Mrs. Warstlcr looks forward to her retirement and said (with a gleam in her eye). I plan to take just one day at a time' Mrs. Harriet Hattie” Steinmet Warstler. we will miss your wit. charm, and warm smile. Each year Canton South High School is proud to award special recognition to those faculty members who are ending their teaching careers. It is impossible to summarize in a few lines all of the knowledge, guidance, and friendship that these dedicated teachers have given us throughout their many years of service. Perhaps the best way that we can honor these individuals is to let them know that we will remember all of the help that they have given us. We would also want them to carry this thought with them: “What greater or better gift can we offer the republic than to teach and instruct our youth? Cicero RICHARD CLINTON LIMBERT Richard Clinton Limbert is a graduate of Canton McKinley High School. He served in the United States Air Force as a photographer during World War II. After the war he attended Kent State University to begin preparation for a career in teaching. Upon receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Kent. Mr. Limbert began teaching at Canton South. His career with Canton Local Schools spans thirty-four years Twenty-seven of those years were spent at South in the areas of biology, general science, physical science, and Science II. While at Walker Junior High, he taught eighth grade science and earth science. During these many years Mr Limbert made sure that his students acquired the new scientific skills of the day and that they developed and polished their skills in the use of the scientific method Classes did not occupy all of Mr. Limbert’s time He has donated much of his free time to the extra-curricular activities at South As a sponsor of Hi-Y. the club received three national awards. He also acted as coordinator of the junior class for five years and was an advisor for the Audio Visual Club. Mr. Limbert is married and has two children. Debra and Paul. Simpson United Methodist Church has claimed Mr. Limbert as a member for over fifty years Retiring from teaching does not mean that Mr. Limbert will be idle. He will continue his work in photography. Your friendliness and sense of humor have added much to our lives. For this we thank you. MRS THELMA W ATKINS Mrs. Thelma Watkins has spent forty-one years in education. Dunng those years, she has worked to promote the study of language When other schools were dropping language classes due to lack of interest, her I .atin classes were in demand She believed in the necessity of Latin and was able to convince others, too. of its importance. Mrs. Watkins is a graduate of Ashland College and has attended Kent State University and Malone College for additional coursework. She is a member of the American and Ohio Classical Leagues and was recently chosen as a Jennings Scholar. Activity and travel have always been a part of Mrs. Watkins' life. She and her husband have traveled extensively over the years and have visited Europe, the Orient. Israel, and Kenya. Often, that travel involved visiting their two sons. David and Timothy. Retirement from education may be closing one chapter in Mrs. Watkins' life, but it will be expanding other areas for her. She will continue her travel and will begin volunteer work for her favorite charity organizations.
