Seated (L-R): Regina Kinlow, Jerri Bricker, Michele Sankovich, Rota Marzec, Lisa Cotopolis. Sherri Adams Success Success is speaking words of praise, In cheering other people's ways. In doing just the best you can. With every task and every plan, It's silence when your speech would hurt, Politeness when your neighbor's curt, It's deafness when the scandal flows, And sympathy with other's woes, It’s loyalty when duty calls, It’s courage when disaster falls, It’s patience when the hours are long, It's found in laughter and in song, It's in the silent time of prayer, In happiness and in despair, In all of life and nothing less, We find the thing we call success. On September 26,1963, Sherri Adams was born to Mr. and Mrs. James Adams. On October 25,1980, Sherri was tragically taken from her family and friends. In those seventeen years were packed many of the accomplishments most people do not realize in an entire lifetime. How do we remember her? She was president of her sophomore class, football homecoming attendant, president of speech club and two-year qualifier for State Speech Tournament, freshman cheerleader full of spirit, Sunday school teacher, lay witness commentator, an artist (studied at the Canton Art Institute), a musician (starred in “Brigadoon”), an actress at Players Guild, president of the Teen Board, and an active member of the annual staff and National Honor Society. She also led midget-football cheerleaders and earned a Magna Cum Laude in Latin. Although Sherri had many accomplishments in her lifetime, those who knew her well probably best remember her for her warm, caring, and friendly personality. Sherri had that unique ability of making all feel welcome and at ease with her. She could bring sunshine into someone’s day just by her cheery face, bright smile, and always having something nice to say. Her deep concern and enthusiasm touched all those who had the opportunity of knowing her. She is loved like a sister. Her life full of activity touched us all and is now a living memorial to what can be accomplished in so short a time. Thank you, Sherri, for the inspiration. You built a monument that will never crumble. Another successful dance. O’boy! My own piece of chalk. Hey! Look at me. I’m prettier. My gosh, what bad breath. Don't you dare take my picture! It's better in here. K Is it Prince Charming or the ugly Frog? Caught in the act. 4 Music is the only language in which you cannot say a mean or sarcastic thing. Best wishes and continued success to One of Ohio’s finest. In Memory of Larry Donald Paul Jr. Spending only one year at Canton South does not give one sufficient time to become known by many. Those of us who learned to know Larry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Paul, remember his ready smile and cheery greet- ing. Larry’s tragic death limited our acquaint- ance with him. May this recognition of Larry through his school yearbook refresh our mem- ory of the smile and the greeting. School Organizations Code 1. Art Guild 2. Annual 3. Audio-Visual 4. Band 5. PAM BRIDGES Newspaper Staff Row 1: Nancy Wolfe, Beth Eckinger Row 2: Leslie Wendling (Editor) Row 3: Regina Kinlow, Sue Parsons, Scott Sanders, Maria Foss Mrs. Pedicord (Advisor) SENIOR DANCE SPOTLIGHT Martha Cook Canton Local Schools has known Martha Cook as a student, teacher, and counselor, covering a span of many years. She has been devoted to her job and has given unselfishly of her talents and time. Martha began her teaching career in Louisville. The East Sparta High School students knew her as a teacher of English and director of the band. At Sandy Valley she taught English, Latin, and there began her counseling career. Martha came to Canton South in 1962 and was named Director of Guidance in 1970. She has taught at Walsh and Malone Colleges during her summer months. After graduating from Canton South High School, she entered The Ohio State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Sci- ence Degree in English. Kent State University granted her a Master of Education Degree in Guidance and Counseling. Martha was accepted in the Akron University Law School in 1968. Education was still a challenge to her, so she took additional courses at Kent State University, then began her doctoral work at Akron University and received her Doctorate Degree in Educational Administration in 1979. She is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Delta Kappa Gamma and the National Forensic League. Other activities include President of Stark County Guidance Association, church treasurer and member of the Board of the East Sparta Christian Church. The recipient of many awards and honors, Martha was chosen the Outstanding Counselor in the State of Ohio in 1974 and re- ceived the Ohio School Counselor Research Award in 1979. As a result of her extensive education, Martha possesses Permanent High School, Permanent Pupil Personnel and Permanent High School Principal certificates. Martha is married to Marvin Cook, a dairy farmer. They have a married son, Mark, who is an Account Executive at Merrill Lynch. Though Martha is retiring from public education, her retirement marks a new beginning in her career. She will officially begin her new duties as a full professor of Psychology and Education and Director of Advising at Malone College on July 1 st. There is no word that can adequately describe Martha. She is sister, wife, mother, scholar, friend, teacher, confidante, counselor — a child of God. It takes all of these and more to describe Martha Jane Barber Cook. Bernice Louise Gambler Kibler Why do students become teachers? Because they had a teacher like Mrs. Kibler and want to emulate her style. As a student growing up in the Malvern Schools, Bernice Gamber decided she wanted to pursue further education, therefore, she en- rolled in Mt. Union College. While there, she decided to dedicate a portion of her life to education. Mt. Union conferred the Bachelor of Arts Degree on her in 1951 with a major in comprehensive social studies and minors in English and biological science. Her first teaching assignment was at Bolivar High School where she taught seventh through twelfth grade English plus U.S. History. In 1956 she was hired at the newly-consolidated system of Sandy Valley as teacher of ninth, tenth and eleventh grade English and U.S. history. Canton South hired Mrs. Kibler in 1960; in 1974 she received her Masters of Edcuation in guidance and counseling; from the University of Akron in 1978 she was made department chairperson in English. Under her leadership, the High Intensity Learning System was intro- duced as a vital part of the reading, literature and total English program at Canton South. In addition to her educational accomplishments, Mrs. Kibler has been active in church work as a Sunday school teacher, church officer and board member of the East Sparta Christian Church. She presently serves as deaconess at the North Canton Community Christian Church. She serves as a tour guide for the Stark County District Library, and she is past-secretary of the Canton-Massillon Chapter of Mt. Union Women. In giving thirty years of her life to education Mrs. Kibler has a nostal- gia enhanced by the many, many compliments from her former stu- dents. Upon Bernice's retirement from Canton South, her peers, former students and students wish her well. The memories she leaves behind are monuments to her success as an educator. God Bless you Mrs. Kibler, ■A IS Richard Halstead Cain There are many kinds of people who pass our way in a lifetime. Some we remember forever. Such is the case of Richard Cain. The associa- tions one has had with Mr. Cain temper our remembrance making it unanimously positive. Graduate of Louisville High School, Bachelor's Degree from Mt. Union College and Master’s Degree from Kent State are the scholarly credentials of Mr. Cain. However, his greatest successes are the lives he has touched from the academic classroom. Mr. Cain served in the United States Air Force as a weather observer from 1945-57. He began his teaching career at Big Prairie High School in 1949 teaching general science, biology, chemistry and physics. He was promoted to Big Prairie Lakeville Elementary School as principal in 1953 and came to Canton South in 1957. In 1961 he was named science department chairperson, and in 1966 he was named a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar. As department leader, Mr. Cain took his talents into the elementary schools and shared his knowledge of experimental scientific en- deavors. He also served faithfully and well in developing a total science program for Canton Local. Mr. Cain is married and has two children. Upon his retirement Mr. Cain still plans to “teach , but his students will be on the college level. Mr. Cain, to you and your family, we which only the best.
