DEDICATION Those of us who are graduating in 1973 hopefully have a definite advantage over those who graduated in 1926. In three years the stock market was to crash. Names such as Charles Lindbergh. Will Rogers and Herbert Hoover were to make the headlines. Another Herbert made the scene in 1926 when a diploma from Cambridge High School was awarded to a man named Hackenberg. Many events have taken place in the life of this young man who was destined to be an educator first and a coach second. After earning an AB degree from Wittenberg in 1930, he came to a small high school in Stark County which was then called Canton Township High School. He taught English I, geography, economics and history. The school was so small that the faculty taught whatever there was to teach. College majors and minors were incidental. His great interest in sports kept him occupied after school in the guiding of young athletes toward perfection in their chosen sport. In 1939 Herbert Hackenberg received an MA degree from Columbia and went to Canton Lehman to teach. In 1956 he returned to his high school Alma Mater to teach, but destiny returned him to Canton South in 1960 after a few years of being self employed. The last twelve years with Canton South have made this Christian gentlemen a legend in his time.” Many people do not know the intimate life of this educator because he seldom talks about himself. In World War II he was with the United States Navy as a Recruit Drill Instructor. While in the Navy he met Miss Wilma Osborne from Utah, whom he married. Their family of two fine sons, alumni of Canton South, gave the world a Doctor of Osteopathy and a basketball coach, John and Larry, respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Hackenberg also boast a fine grandchild, John Herbert. Space does not permit philosophizing about this outstanding educator. Suffice to say that Canton Township — Canton South is extremely proud to dedicate its 1973 Moderian to Herbert Hackenberg, The man, the teacher, the coach, the legend behind many success stories of Canton South students. 5
