MY CLASS TRIP
At ten o'clock the evening of the fifteenth of April, Mr. and
Mrs. Gibson, Saundra Tucker and I left for New York. It was rain-
ing, and right away the first incident of our trip occurred when
the Mercury broke down between Hartford and Canton. Westopped a
few times on the way for refreshing snacks, and managed to get off
the Merritt Parkway before our last drop of gas was gone. We pro-
ceeded in the fog at about 25 m.p.h. and arrived in Stamford, Conn.
about ten o'clock. We left the car there and boarded a train for
Grand Central Station. A lunch and a rest at the Hotel Piccadilly
refreshed us so that we were ready and raring to dc the big city!
Our first sight was the Empire State Building. From the very
top of the tallest building in the world we saw the city by day
and then watched the millions of lights come on all over New York
City. We stopped in the observation tower and wrote post cards.
Did you get them? After this we had supper in the famous Toffenemdx
in Times Square. Radio City Music Hall was first on the list for
entertainment. It was the famous Easter Pageant which has played
during this season for many year. There were numerous stage acts
which were all wonderful. There was also.a movie, WSerenadeW. We
were on our way to the hotel when we decided that it was too early
to go to bed our first night in New York City so we went to another
movie. We saw VThe Benny Goodman Storyn and NThe Nat King Storyn.
On the second day we got up early to go to the Dave Garroway
show. After we found our way there, we were told that it was going
to originate-from Cincinatti that morning. This day was Tuesday
and we filled it out with a tour of the United Nations Building,
the TV show, VFeather Your Nestu and a trip to the Statue of ' -
Liberty. If you plan to go up the twelve flights plus 123 steps,
don't bet the others you can beat the elevator up. You probably
can, but you'll never be the same again! That night we went to
Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus which is the largest
circus in the world.
The next day we went on a tour of Rockerfeller Center. On
this tour we saw where TV shows such as VHit Paraden and the WBig
Storyn originate, During the afternoon we went to the Palace
Theatre and saw eight acts of vaudeville and the movie, VNever Say
Goodbyen. At night we had tickets to the TV show,'Masquerade Party'
but the seats were all full when we got there. However, we did see
Peter Lind Hayes, Mary Healy and all of the important people on the
show. The rest of the evening we went to a place where we had our
pictures taken together. There we met the kids from Litchfield
Academy, then another movie and then something more to eat!!
Thursday we waved on the Dave Garroway show--did you see us?--
and then journeyed to the Bronx Zoo where we saw many interesting
animals. ,After this we went to the Hayden Planetarium where we
saw the planets and starts located as they appear in the sky at
different seasons. Thursday night we bought tickets to the stage
play, VJanusV with Claudette Colbert and Robert Preston playing the
leads, which was very good. The theatre for this play was right
across the street from our hotel,”
