Honoring a man with as many attributes as A.R. BurkoX proved to be a challenging task. Senior faculty member, Dean of Men for eleven years, Department Chairman of Modern Language from 1944-1973, Vice-President and Provost are just a few of the distinguished positions he has held while ass ociated with Campbell. Having been with Campbell for 44 years. Dr. Burkot, though resigning from his official duties, will continue to teach Word Study and the Romance languages. He once said, with snow whirling around him, Even in weather like this you ' ve got to feed the students and care for them. If only half of the students can make it to class, it ' s only right for a teacher to be there for their sakes. Dr. Burkot has been described as a 20th century embodiment of a 19th century American legend. More than this, the students can always rely on Dr. Burkot, for he always seems to be available whenever he is needed most. Because of his many services and acts of friendship to the University, we proclaim A.R. Burkot to be a great asset to the growth and prosperity of Campbell University. A Living Legend

Hoggie ' s Final Graduation This year ' s Pine Burr dedication, in memory of a well-known and much- loved man, rightfully honors Hargrove Bellamy Davis. Coach Davis was with Campbell University long before it be- came a university. He personified and implemented the ideas for which Campbell University stands. He was born in Wilmington, NC, on Nov. 12, 1917, and lived there until he started college here at Campbell in 1938. He played baseball and football for Campbell from 1938 through 1940. He began a professional baseball career in 1941 that was interrupted by World War II. After three years as a United States Army aviation engineer, he re- turned to baseball until he joined the Campbell faculty in 1947. He assisted in Physical Education and helped to develop the basketball program. As the baseball coach, he fielded consis- tent winners. In his first year of senior-college combat, his diamond record was 13-8. In the last decade, he assisted in the development of three major league pitchers. Coach Davis, the golf instructor at Campbell, was responsible in bringing to us the only National Championship that Campbell has acquired. Whether he taught a class, coached a team or directed the department of athletics, he did it 100 per cent without griping or complain- ing. Wife, Jeanette Levister Davis of Vir- gilina, Va., son, Hargrove Davis, Jr., and stepson, W.L. Gill, will always re- member Hoggie as a man who lived his life for other people, especially the students. Always putting Campbell first. Coach Davis never bled; if he did, it was colored orange and black. He was totally generous, unselfish, and Christian in his sharing of his faith with those whom he knew. One day in class, he told the students that he might not be there the next time class met. If I ' m not, I ' ll be in heaven. When I ' m there, I ' ll look down on you and think of you from time to time. He was a great friend and a real treasure to Campbell University. On November 16, 1979, Coach Davis won his crown. Because of his great dedication to the University and especially to the stu- dents, we proudly dedicate the 1980 Pine Burr to Coach Hargrove Davis.
