The Class of '81 has been exploding with and working very hard all through the summer money-making projects to prepare them for busy junior year. During the annual Fourth of July Festival at Roost velt Park, the sophomores had a booth where the sold chili dogs, hot dogs, and pop. During the surr mer, they also had a car wash. In addition, the sophomores put a little spice into the life at Campbell Memorial High School whe they had their spice sale in March. This proved to b very successful. ln brief, the Class of '81 has proved to be a eager group of people at Campbell Memorial worl ing hard to achieve their goals. Junlor Class Sponsor: Mr. Rick Gozur The junior class began the school year with a surge of energy. This energy led them to achieve their goals. The 1978 Homecoming was one of their main goals. They were responsible for the blast- ing off of the Homecoming Parade and the crowning of the queen. Some members of the junior class prepared the Memo which was composed of remarks and opin- ions of the student body. The juniors had to sat- isfy the 'students so no one would explode with anger. As seconds, minutes, hours, days, and months passed by, the juniors prepared themselves for their greatest goal. This goal is to be dynamite seniors so they may be a success in life. ! f- Top L to R: Mariaane Duca, Treas.g Jackie Wasko, Sharon Busonik, Soc. Chair.: Karen Testa, Sec. Bottom Sferra, Soc. Was it so terribly long ago that you were that way? ls this what growing up is all about? That child in us must be replaced by another person- A responsible and decisive adult g ready to make im- portant decisions about job, college, and marriage. These decisions will affect the quality of the rest of your life. You are now at that stage and I pray that we, the faculty, have helped develop the skills in you necessary to make these decisions. Some of you feel your edu- cation is over, but I am sure most of you recognize it is just beginning and will continue throughout your life time. Many of you will hold fond memories of your days at Memorial because of your personal involvement with our class over the last four years. You will always have those special stories to tell. I would like you to know I also hold fond and special memor- ies of you, for I have learned and experienced much in my two and a half years as your class sponsor. Congratulations and much happiness to all of you. One many high school students await. Eight seniors received spec- ial honors at the ceremony held on June 1. Sharing this spotlight were four valedictorians and four saluditorians. Christine Wallace, Dianne Gulu, Ste- phen Sferra, and Mark Liber- tin were awarded for their outstanding acadmic a- chievement. They main- tained a 4.0 average throughout the four years of their high school career. The Saluditorians honored were Mary Beth Korchnak, Jeanine Bohazi, Irene Mail- lis, and Ursula Marenkovic. Each of whom obtained a high school average of 3.9 or better. This outstanding academic second was ac- companied by personal in- volvement in several extra- curricular activities in which performance equalled that in the classroom. These eight seniors reflected their learning in the ideas ex- pressed in their commence- ment speeches. X SI O The only thought passing through the minds of the seniors during commencement practice was that of keeping in step with the drum beat. But on Friday, June 1, at 6:00 p.m. in the Camp- bell Memorial Stadium, that thought faded away and a new one was born. This new thought was that today was the day-the day each senior strived for, impatient- ly waited for, and finally reached. June 1 will surely be a day to re- member. lt was the day when the speaker system broke down dur- ing the speeches and impatient seniors waited to receive their diplomas Conly later to run off the field in the rainj. The rememberance of this day will last forever in our friends', teachers', relatives', parents', and especially in our minds. This day was the start of a new beginning. WILL THE CRO WN? On Thursday. the 28th ot September. the sophomore, iun- ior, and senior boys were given the privilege of choosing their candidates for the 1978 Homecoming Court. Tension was mounted on every senior girI's face as they tried to sneak a peek at the ballot ot the boy sitting next to them during homeroom. Friday seemed to drag on and on, The usual pep assembly seemed different. A suspenseful at- mosphere hung heavily the heads of the senior section. Cheers were chanted but the words seemed to hold little significance. Everyone anticipated the outcome of Thurs- day's election. Minutes hung like hours but the time finally came for the announcement. The junior class president stood before the student body- to exclairn the words every- one longed to hear. The students applauded enthusiastically as the five victorious girls, Darlene Johnson, Lisa Marino. Diane Ciccoleili, Jennifer Fiorim, and Diane Dubos stepped onto the stage to face those who made their dreams come true. LISA, OUR QUEEN Above: Lisa Marino becomes the recipient of many kisses throughout the evening. The familiar tunes of the marching band marked the beginning of the Homecoming Parade. This was the spark which ignited the fuse of the nights events that lead up to the explosion of joy when the 1978 Homecoming Queen was chosen. Even the continuous rainfall failed to place a damper on the ceremonial proceedings. The parade route was cluttered with the citizens of Campbell, each attempting to catch a glimpse of the lovely candidates as they rode past. The fuse burned steadily and the parade gave way to the pre- game activities. The girls were chauffeured onto the 50 yard line where they were greeted by their escorts. While being accompanied to their designated positions on the football field, the candidates and their escorts were introduced to the audience. It was at this time that the girls were awarded their gifts. As a result, the anxious photographers took advantage of the situation by snapping a plentiful amount of candid shots. As the fuse grew shorter and shorter, so it was with the time left before the announcement everyone was waiting for. The tension rose like thick smoke from the stands where people were clus- tered together under umbrellas, all awaiting the results. The band serenaded the spectators softly as the 1977 Homecoming Queen, Miss Gina Zinghini, appeared from the background. Holding the crown, she walked around the girls and finally placed it upon the head of Miss Lisa Marino. Shouts of both joy for the new Queen and relief that the suspense was over were expressed. Lisa was then arrayed with more gifts and kisses. Below: A parade isn't complete without a clown. 'ss' Above: Lisa's dreams become her realities, .1 Above: Mary and Rena take advantage of the disco beat Below: Starting it off with a bang. 4. 7 The 1978 Senior Spaghetti Dinner was held in our cafeteria on April 14. The lucky girls were: Freshmen Michelle Congemi, Lisa Tabus, and Janice Kozuskog Sophmores Kathy Vansuch, Mary Ann Lopez, and Cindy Fiorinig Juniors Norma DiPiero, Cathy Cougras, and Darla DiPienzo3 Seniors Diane Dubos and Ursula Marenkovic. Each girl designed and decorated her own valentine box which was put on display during the lunch periods for admirers to drop their change in their favorite sweetheart's box. After days of suspense, the Reveler Staff organized an assembly to announce the queen and her court. One by one the name of the four class finalists were announced. Freshman Lisa Tabus, Sophomore Mary Ann Lopez, Junior Cathy Cougras, and Senior Ursula Marenkovic. The tension rose through the auditorium as the time came to reveal the school sweetheart and her court. The voice of the announcer echoed in the auditorium over the silence of the impatient listener. Out of only one game until the very end, the Freshmen squad provided their few faithful fans with plenty of exciting action. Coach Gozur took a page from an outdated playbook and enstalled an old-fashioned Single Wing offense. The result was a sometimes explosive offense that kept defenses thoroughly confused. It may have worked if the offense wasn't just as confused! When the season had ended, football was over for some. For others a career of varsity football loomed ahead. With six juniors among the eight reg- ulars, and only one varsity play- er returning from the previous year, the 1979 Memorial basket- ball team possessed both quali- ties. Strangely, though, the Red Devils finished with quite a suc- cessful season. The Devils ended with a 6-3 Steel Valley record, good for fourth place, and a 7-12 record overall. A rotating line-up of eight regu- lars was employed by head coach John Shadonix, who cited such a team concept as the key to a suc- cessful season. Standing out, though, was Most Valuable Play- er, Bryant Gillespie, who topped the Conference in rebounds and was selected to the second team, All-SVC. -5 7 l fe: , 1 kr RA.,-' 5 rg? 4 gg , 31 wx i Bryant Gillespie soars over a flock of Eagles!
