K-fggfm una- Mr. Robert Culp To you, Mr. Robert Culp, we dedicate this year- book with the highest respect and deepest admir- ation that any group of students can bestow upon an individual. The sincere interest and concern you display toward the individual problems of our vast student body show a great desire to fulfill not only the duties of an outstanding principal, but also the requirements of an understanding friend. More than one student has heard you say, Any time you have a problem or if something is annoying you, don't hesitate to see me about it. The doors of my office are open to any student at any time. It is this attitude that has won the admiration, respect, love and loyalty of the Campbell High Student Body. For the past ten years you have devotedly served the students, parents and community of Campbell. We express our appreciation through the dedication of this 1959 Oriole. 5 6? 4' L, IN MR. SAMUEL P. REED His smile, the twinkle in his eye and his warm responses are the features and characteristics we will always remember about our former friend and prin- cipal, Mr. Samuel P. Reed, whose untimely death took him from us on May l4, l958. Mr. Reed returned to Campbell High, his Alma Mater, in l955 to serve as principal. He was priv- ileged to enjoy the work in this capacity for only three short years. It is difficult to understand that a man like Mr. Reed had to suffer so much and be taken' away from those who loved and respected him. He left the Campbell High Bucs a gift, and that treasure is the admiration of teenagers and a grow- ing concern for their education. I0 Yak.:-f V'L ' i . IF - ff- Superintendent DW? Classes Bruce Johnson Terry Stonehocker Brooke Manza na res Chester ltow Senior Class We, the Senior Class of '59 can long be proud of our accomplishments at Camp- bell High School. Since our first year of school as Fresh- men, we earned the title, a class of firsts -we were the first Freshman Class to cast the highest percentage of votes in a council election, the first Junior Class to sell the greatest amount of subscriptions, per student, in the Junior Magazine Sale, the very first Senior Class to present its Senior Play to a completely filled audi- torium during both performances. Under the capable leadership of Pres- idents Steve Larson and Sam Lo Bue, Vice Presidents Charlotte Uyeda and Will Lu- jan, Secretaries Kathy Ray and Grace Ku- bota, and Treasurers Florence Gianetto and Patte Bowman, we, as Freshman, en- joyed a year which proved to be great fun for all. We held our skating party that year, and produced an assembly which exceeded them all. ln our Sophomore year we again dis- played our talents in the Sophomore As- sembly, and held a Spring Party with swimming, dancing, and food for all. Sam Lo Bue and Will Lujan were our presi- dents that year, Vice Presidents were Charlotte Uyeda and Florence Gianetto, with Secretaries Sharon Pinza and Judy Langen, and Treasurers Pat Harrison and Steve Larson. Our Junior year was a year of elections, Jerry Hyde, Sam LoBue, and Will Lujan became councilmen, while we chose Steve Larson and Sam LoBue as Presidents, Judy Langen and Florence Gianetto as Vice Presidents, Secretaries Judy and Jeanne Sandretto, and Treasurers Doug Wilson and Patte Bowman. To pay the expenses of our wonderful Junior Prom, Moon- light Enchantment, and the future, fun- filled Senior year, we sold 554,342 worth of magazine subscriptions. During the remaining months, the top salesmen en- joyed a steak fry and the entire class put on another top notch Junior Assembly. History of '59 Certainly our first three years as Buc- caneers were memorable ones, but we all remember most vividly our final two se- mesters at Campbell High-the glorious Senior Year. We'll remember the daily incidents like the many cheery Hi's as we walked down the corridors-- like the helter- skelter panic of the five minute break between classes and how we sullenly trudged into Room 3l for that little slip of paper which meant that five minutes wasn't long enough. We'll not soon forget the sufferings caused by the Constitution notebook and term paper. We'll remember the happy times of Easter Vacation, of football and basketball games. Mainly, though, we'll remember the big times-there was our excellent Senior Play, Dino, which received showers of praise from many for being the best ever presented on the Campbell stage. How could we forget our sparkling Ball, Moments to Remember -how we danced to the music of Lee Mortenson in beautiful Adobe Creek Lodge? The mem- ory of our Sneak Day when we trekked to Santa Cruz on the blue Pacific for a fun- filled day of swimming, sunning, baseball, volleyball, eating, and, most of all un- studying, will linger for a long time. We'll remember our class officers with Bruce Johnson at the helm first semester, and Sam Lo Bue taking over second se- mester. We'll remember also the high scholas- tic rating so apparent at Campbell. 75WJ of Campbell's seniors continue their ed- ucation at a college as compared to the national average-35fk. Let us always be thankful for the fine counsellors and teachers who have helped us reach Baccalaureate and, finally grad- uation. Let us also thank them for help- ing to make the Class of '59-the class of firsts, -the most exceptional class ever to spend four years at Campbell High School. They gave tremendous support to both the Freshman Reception and the Frosh Skating Party. The Freshman' Assembly, ri- valing all the rest, was loaded with variety and talent. Against Willow Glen, the Bucs were defeated, l9-7. With the third game, league play got under way, and we beat Fremont l3-O. Our next game was against our sister school, Camden. lt was expected to be one of our toughest games, but it turned into a 40-6 rout. We followed this with two more wins, downing Sun- nyvale 39-27, and Los Altos 33-13. Going into our sixth game, we were tied for the league lead with Santa Clara and Los Gatos. After defeating Mountain View 34-6, we lead the league with a 5-O record. However, the remaining games were to tell the out- come. Our first league lost came in a night game against Santa Clara at the close score of 7-6 Due to a rule infraction, Los Gatos moved into first place by winning its Mountain View game by forfeiture. On Thanksgiving Day, the Bucs met a tough Los Gatos team and we were de- feated by a l4-O margin. This ended the l958 season with a 5-2 record and third place in the SCVAL-WVD. i,ss , lg. is,. The Campbell High Concert Orchestra, under the able direction of Mr. Frank Triena, has again presented an outstanding year of entertainment. ln the past they have taken many superior ratings at State Festivals, from which they were in vited to the Music Educators' All-Western States Conference. Mr. Triena has strengthened his department's musicianship with extensive study abroad the 1 1 most recent was the summer of i958 at the Sorbonne University in Paris. He also is assisted by Peter Conrardy, the Concertmaster, and student conductors from San Jose State. This past year the orchestra played before service clubs, other schools lincluding grammar levell, the variety shows iwith soloistsl, the Christmas show, the senior play, the baccalaureate services, and the most important event, the Spring Concert. Some orchestra members also participated in San Jose Junior Symphony, a few students during the summer took part in the College of the Pacific Music Camp, in Stockton, to help make up the seventy-member orchestra. 114 Many of the students take private lessons to progress and strive for higher chair positions. The Glee Club members blend their voices in song and thrill to the wondrous experience of expression that only music can bring. The Christmas program and the Spring Concert would not be complete without the light hearted songs rendered by the Glee Club. Each member creates and develops self expression through music and musical understanding. They learn to enjoy lite to its fullest. Charles Darwin once wrote, lf I had my life to live over, I would have made a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once a week: for perhaps the parts of my brain now atrophied would thus have kept active through use. The loss of these tastes is a loss of happiness and may pos- sibly be injurious to the intellect, and more probably the moral character, by enfeebling the emotional part of our nature. Front Row: V. During the past year it has performed in tour parades and has been featured in nine high school football games. The highlight of the marching season was its appearance at Kezar Stadium. ln the words of the stadium manager, lt was the best show we have seen all year, for that matter, ever. The show was in honor of the 49'ers and Billy Wilson. Majorettes for the past year were, head majorette, Jean Topogna and Shirley Mattei. Also working this year with Mr. Perkins was Henry Zander, band president. Several awards are given to band members, the most distinguished of which is the John Pnilip Sousa award presented by the Campbell Lions' Club to the most outstanding band member each year. Wetterstrom enotes Life Members -I 19 GIRLS' STATE Judy Langen My most treasured memory from Girls' State is that of the wonder- ful girls with whom I had the priv- ilege to associate. Their ideals and attitudes were admired by all, but yet, unlike those of any other group of teenagers. Linda Page, of San Bernardino, best illustrated this in the poem she wrote at Girls' State after being defeated in an election. I share her poem with you as a symbol of the mood of California Girls' State. Most sincerely, Judy Langen THE ELECTION OF LIFE What is a winner? She's loved and adored, She's cheered and respected- She .has her reward. She won the fight fairly, Her head is held high. Her goal has been reached, Now duty stands by. What is a loser? She cheers with the crowd, She loves,'and loves dearly, For when cheers are loud She knows that the winner Finds happiness great And she knows that God Has asked her to wait. She feels quite ashamed That she asked him to part With his heaven-sent plan Just to please her small heart She's glad that He didn't- Her great hope is for A task set for her Which will suit Him much more. Her goals are not reached, They've still a gold hue- So, what is a loser? A winner, too. I20 EXCHANGE STUDENT Ellen Sorensen I want to thank all of you with all my heart for the wonderful year I have had here in America, going to school with you, taking part in your activities and learning to know you as you really are. You could have gotten an ex- change student from any country in the world, and then I, far up in nor- thern Norway was the lucky one to come to Campbell High. I have tried to tell you a little about Norway and about Norwegian life, teenagers and schools, and l hope I have done my job the right way so you have gained something from it. I certainly have had many experiences during this year, which I don't think I would have had if I hadn't had the opportunity to come to America as a high school student and be with you as just another of your fellow students. This is the purpose of the American Field Service, and I sincerely hope that you will go on with the program for many years. I am so grateful to you because you treated me the way you did. This year has been the greatest experience in my life, and I will always remember Campbell High and the students whc welcomed me so warmly. With my deepest appreciation Sincerely, Ellen Sorensen BQYS' STATE Jerry Hyde Boys' State was terrific! I can't begin to describe the greatness of this wonderful experience. The group in attendance con- sisted of 850 boys, from the entire state, who had iust completed their junior year in high school. As you can surely realize, so many boys living together for one week in Sacramento can and did certainly add up to some most memorable events. Among the highlights of the in- teresting events was a trip to the State Capitol where various state officials, including Governor Knight, addressed the group briefly. During the early part of the big week, campaigns and elections were held to fill many offices, after which we conducted an effective state government of our own on the State Fair Grounds. Much of our free time was occu- pied with participation in organized sports. These many activities en- abled us to make new friendships and learn much about proper func- tions of our state government. I feel greatly indebted to the people who selected me to repre- sent Campbell High, for it was truly a thrill and an experience l will never forget. Most of all, I feel deeply honored to have been able to represent the best bunch of kids I know . . . the kids of Campbell High. ..:..a.f' I Front Row: G. Kamemofo, H. Kanemoto. Second Row: B. Third Roi The A Cappella Choir of Campbell High School is noted for its out- standing work throughout radio, and has made numerous personal ap- pearances. The choir recently appeared at the countywide Teacher's Institute in San Jose. One of the greatest thrills was singing for the National Rotary Convention. The choir is composed of a select group of students and makes an- nual appearances for Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Women'S Country Club, and many other organizations. Also they may be seen in school activities such as assemblies, the Variety Show, the Christmas Program, and the Spring Concert. S ,,,H,-,,Q,.,,,,,, , . . at ,-. 9,5 ..-,. ,A,nn..qpn.A,4..csAass... . Ten choirs appeared at this festival and presented their carols to the public. The mass choir under the direction of Mr. Jester Hair- ston sang traditional Christmas songs. At state festivals, the choir has received superior ratings for many years. The fine quality of this organization is largely attributed to the director, Mr. Frank Triena. Under his leadership, the choir has gained recognition as a truly exceptional organization.
