E L ? -' 3,9225 CAM Debate Record Although spasmodic efforts have been made to do some debating here in Campbell County High School previous to the year 1927, no concerted effort was put forth along this line until then. At the beginning of the year a call for debaters was made, and eleven responded. One at a time, some dropped by the way-side until there were but seven. With these seven, Mr. Henning worked hard on the State debate question, leaving no stone un- turned to make a winning team. Our two debates between Buffalo and Sheridan we split, and then we sent our team to Laramie to take part in the State's Championship tournament. We met and defeated some of the best teams in the state, including Thermopolis, champions of the Basin Country, Rock Springs, and the two-year-state-championship Casper team. This brought us into the semi-Hnals where Torrington defeated us by a two to one decision. In the number of debates won and lost we were tied with Torrington, although that team won second place by means of going into the finals. We were the only team reaching the semi-Hnals that had debated in every round of the tournament as all the other teams had drawn a bye in some one round. For a beginning, this was indeed a successful year. Five debates were won, three were lost and Gillette captured' fourteen out of a total of twenty-four judge's votes. Four letters were awarded to team members for debate. This year fourteen responded to the call for debaters. Of these original fourteen, nine have stayed with it for the year. Last year we had but one girl on the squadf. This year we have but one boy. We have hit the two extremes now, and next year look for as many girls as boys out for debate. We experienced some difficulty in arranging a schedule this year, but finally got a dual with Moorcroft, both ends of which we won in handy fashion. Our next debate was with Buffalo, March 12, with the negative invading Buffalo's stronghold and the afhrmative defending the home fort. Both teams were successful, the negative winning 3 to 0 and the affirmative coming out ahead 2 to l in a closely contested argument. This gives us the following record for two years, with this year unfinished as we still have the Laramie tournament to look forward to. Any student who is chosen on the Debate Seminar becomes, automatically, a member of the lforensic Club. This organization has as its aim the fostering of debat- ing in Campbell County High School, and so far has been very successful in its purpose. This year there are one post-graduate, five seniors, and 1 four juniors in the Club. , i lhief l orI,i'-luv , K - ,...,-.. -.- ,,,, M- -inn-H-Uv-f V f- f ' ' Wvf. , HJ when H fa
