CAMPUS ECHOES 1966 Volume Eighteen Cameron High School Cameron, South Carolina EDITOR -- Donna Bull BUSINESS MANAGER -- Jan Bull What is a memory? --an abstract thinker scrawling equations on the blackboard --an all-out effort to make that track jump the longest --a student's dismay in the clutches of defeat -- spirit aglow in a bonfire before the big game Indescribable moments are made to be preserved. When some 233 students converge on a campus from 8:30 in the morning till 2:40 in the afternoon, there are bound to occur expressions and animations that are impossible to describe in words alone. We have tried to capture these moments of sus- pense, thrill, heartache, and happiness for you to enjoy at present and to look upon in years to come. We, the 1965 CAMPUS ECHOES staff, preserve them for you now in a bound volume entitled . . . 1001 MEMORIES OF CAMERON HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES ARE MADE - WHETHER CONTENTS 7 FACULTY 19 ORGANIZATIONS 31 FEATURES 43 SPORTS 61 CLASSES 9 r WE’RE IN THE CLASSROOM OR . . . Dedica- tion of the CAMPUS ECHOES is an expression of students’ admiration and respect. Because he radiates sincerity and helps us with the problems that stem beyond our work, we extend our apprecia- tion and bestow the greatest honor we can on a man who has endeared himself to each of us, to the school, and to the community. COUNCIL TRAINS FOR LEADERSHIP An informal session of Student Council members takes time out for a pose. Just as the music of a band depends upon the unity of its players, so the success of any school depends greatly on the quality of its governing body. Cameron High School has al- ways placed a hard working group at the head of her govern- ment, and this year we again chose a fine Council. This was proved as the year progressed in the harmonious and seldom discorded functions and duties that were performed by both individuals and committees. The Council sponsored many projects. 21 Somewhere in between a copy pencil or two and a picture or three the 1965 CAMPUS ECHOES was born. Conceived in a dream, born in serenity and delivered in complete panic, this year's book is a new picture with a new face and a new wardrobe. It represents some 233 students, two or three headaches, about 1000 erasures, and close to a million pieces of scratch paper. Months of work have gone into the planning and assembling of the 1965 CAMPUS ECHOESto make it capably represent the thoughts, traditions , and activities of CHS. The 1965 staff sincerely hopes they have been success- ful in their efforts. ASSISTANT Gail Vosburgh and EDITOR Donna Bull. BUSINESS MANAGER Jan Bull and ASSISTANT Cathy Craig. TEAMWORK, DESIRE, AND ABILITY SECURE VICTORIES The 1965 edition of the Cameron Colts romped to four quick victories, then stumbled to a tie and two defeats, before finishing the season with two wins and a loss. The year started with the Colts edging a tough Cross team, 19-14. The big play of the game came Watch out, No. 16; you're my man and you're not going anywhere!! ! My goodness! They've finally caught up with me! Large crowds support the Colts whole-heartedly. Coach Weathers and star Lonnie Bull zero in on the game from the bench. in the fourth period when quarterback Lonnie Bull threw a screen pass to fullback Tom Moss, cover- ing 61 yards for the win- ning touchdown. Off to a fine start the Colts handed Norway their first loss to a Class C team in three years, by whipping them soundly 20-0. The Colts came back in the next two weeks to stampede Bluffton 40-0 and Summerton 32-0. In the Bluffton game halfback Jimmy Stroman took the opening kickoff and ran it back 75 yards for a quick scoring. Quarterback Lonnie Bull sparked the Colts with a fine passing and running display against Summerton. The Colts' defense led by linebackers George Stoudenmire, Stroman, and Moss had shutout their last three opponents. Branchville, who was also undefeated and untied, came to town the following week, scored early, and things looked quite black for Cameron. Much to the pleasure of a fine home- coming crowd, the Colts came back to salvage a 6-6 tie. Under the fine leader- ship and coaching of John Weathers the team was performing very well. Many had predicted the Colts would be lucky to (above) An interception??? break even on the season, but after five games the team was undefeated and ranked third in the state in its respectable class. Things, needless to say, were not too bright in the coming weeks. Edisto set back the Colts 12-6 and rival Elloree rolled to a 25-0 win. The worst losing streak the Colts has en- dured in six years came to a halt the following week with a 41-0 blasting of Hardeeville. Rodney claws in on enemy! Cameron next presented Coach Weathers with a hard-earned 13-12 victory over his hometown, Bow- man . Jimmy Stroman scored twice and end Guiles Moorer caught a pass from Tom Moss for the winning point. In the season's finale the Colts were beated handily by Springfield, 23-0. With this loss, the conference championship slipped out of the Colts' grasp. 49 Senior Players Sparked Team to Lonnie Bull George Stoudenmire Tom Moss Barry Hunter Winning Record Jimmy Strom an Bates Houck George Bell Charles Polin Vance Evans B-Team Gives Underclassmen Experience FIRST ROW: Coach, John Weathers; Hugo Lyons, William Haigler, Robin Felkel, Alan Haddock, Charles Whetstone, Bill Crook, Frank Stoudenmire, Ronnie Coleman. Donna Bull Jan Bull Kathy Whetstone Emilie Rast V-V-Victory, for the Varsity!” -- one yell in many that the cheer- leaders of '65-'66 shouted over and over again for their team. With Jan Bull at the helm, the cheerleaders were with the Colts in wind and rain all the way. They were a mixture of yells, pompoms, untied shoestrings and enthusiasm. Flooded with exu- berance, these seven did their best to instill morale and spirit in the teams along with keeping the fans alive and confident. Substitute cheerleaders had to be selected for the Homecoming game with Branchville, since most of the girls were in the festivities. Cheer- ing loudly for the Colts that night were: Linda Shirer (head), Dot John- son, Diane Troutman, Wanda Felkel, Jeanette Moorer, Becky Mischler, and Susan Rickenbaker. The CHS Senior has reached the end of his stay; he may say it lasted too long or he may be sorrowful in anticipation of separation from his friends. The senior year begins much like any other has. More prerequisites for college courses are offered and the seniors are introduced to Macbeth in English IV. A play is presented and college entrance exams are taken. Much time is spent in the library as term papers are written. Being measured for caps and gowns brings the idea of graduation into a reality. Senior cut day finally rolls around and within the next two weeks, CHS is no more a part of a senior's daily life. With diploma in hand and eyes to the future, the Class of '66 leaves with fond memories and anticipation of the world awaiting them. 62 SENIOR PLAY WAS A BIG SUCCESS! But darling! The Junior year at CHS is one of study, hard work, service, and fun. By this time, some are already looking forward to graduation and col- lege life. A junior's goals are now being set; he strives to achieve them through advanced planning and hard work. His maturity has increased and this has brought the junior the realization that he is an integral part of CHS. Fund-raising projects characterize the junior year as May brings forth the Junior Senior Prom. Suppers and a play are planned and fi- nanced . Membership in clubs brings honor and responsibility to the junior. In this important role he develops into an active and well-rounded individual. 68 Juniors Finance ’66 Junior-Senior Prom The In Crowd. As the student enters his sophomore year at CHS, he begins to in- crease in self-confidence, and to feel more fully that he truly belongs in the high school group. With the start of classes, the sophomore embarks on a year of study and hard work. Assignments become more difficult and his teachers expect more from him. He broadens his perspective by joining organizations and playing in athletic contests. As the year comes to a close, the sophomore moves to fill a junior's place, knowing he will encounter newer and more difficult problems. 72 EFFORT PAYS OFF FOR SOPHOMORES Boy! The freshman begins to establish better study habits to broaden his knowledge. New ideas about different subjects are formed and his fear of expressing his own opinion is lessened. He branches his quest toward fulfillment, achievement, and recognition. These, he knows, are attained only through dedi- cation and application. 76 NEW OPPORTUNITIES OPEN TO CHS FROSH What's the good new, girls? John C.
