We Published Ilus Diary of our Stars . . . One of the things a better school should have is a good year book. Since the first issue of our PURPLE AND GOLD was published, modern photography and methods of printing have changed in numerous ways. This year, the literary, business, and art staffs of the' PURPLE AND GOLD under the guidance of Mr.. Charles Iones, Mrs. Constance Pawlak, and' Miss Lyola Pedrick have endeavored to give you exclusive photographs and information about your school, which will present you with hours of pleasant memories in the years to come. Will you ever forget the fun you had at the Harvest Moon dance, or the gaiety of the Novelty dance? It is memories like these, which we, the staffs of the PURPLE AND GOLD, have tried to capture for you in your year book. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed compiling it for you. The members of the PURPLE AND GOLD literary staff are busily conferring on the plans for arranging our school year book. Through the conscientious workers on the PURPLE AND GOLD business staff the year book is brought to you. Our two able typists on the PURPLE AND GOLD, Nancy Spagnola and Dolores Smith, discuss their work. I f 5 1 1 . ...ai H150 .l In One of the greatest achievements a student can attain in Camden High School is member- ship in the National Honor Society. Miss lane C. Kittle is the faculty advisor of our young Walt Whitman chapter. Membership in this organization is based on scholarship, leadership, character, and service -four attributes which go to make a vvzell- rounded person. Seniors and juniors were elected to this society in the spring by their scholarship achievement and ratings from their teachers. This organization assisted with the annual Holly Hop, revised the Student handbook, and presented prizes at commencement. These activities, plus many others, make this society one which plays a helpful and necessary role in our school life. In .S'1:lmIar.s'lup . . . One of the brighter aspects of our school life, to which everyone anxiously looks forward. is the annual presentation of the Wilbur F. Rose Public Speaking Contest under the experi- enced and patient direction of Miss Ethel G. Lord, head of the speech department. Anyone who feels capable may render his chosen selection in the preliminaries. From this group six girls and six boys are chosen for the semi-finalist contest. A board of faculty judges then selects the final contestants, three boys and three girls. An appreciative audience was entertained on this gala occasion which took place in our auditorium on November 18, 1949. Regardless of who wins the coveted award, which will be presented at Commencement, all six performed as champions. The stars of the evening were Iames Di Raddo, Iean Rosenblatt, William Kushner, Nancy Ann Silver, Arthur Schard, and Rae Kumove. 0 1 Under the leadership of Ioseph Micciche, president, Ioseph Colangelo, sec- retary, Nancy Spagnola, treasurer, Vera Girardi, vice president, and Alvina Nicholson, recorder, the Student Government Association organizes varied 1 1 i school functions, lil In lla vernmenl . . . To many of you, Student Government means traffic officers busily easing the flow of students through our hallowed hallsp or perhaps a guiding usher comes in mind: maybe others of us recall the many times We've gratefully accepted our lost books and Wallets at the lost and found department, But these are only a few of the many functions our association performs. Can we forget the get-Well cards sent by the alert welfare committee? Can't you still see those hustling insignia commit- tee students selling you a Camden High balloon or a couple of pencils? Dances-lunchtime and evening too-were yours because of the social committee. But Student Governments greatest achievement in l95U Was the establishment of a larger assembly fund with which to bring better assembly programs into our auditorium. Completing the list of activities are locker inspection, sea- sonal pep rallies, monthly leaders' meetings, student council conferences, and the student government report. The functions of this student government, guided by Miss Ruth Carey and Mr, George Hill, have been so varied and numerous that it is difficult to recall the many services it offered. This year marked the premier performance of the Choir, a small group of students selected from our mammoth Glee Club. They presented a wonderful variety of songs from hymns to catchy rhythms.
